The (, ''City Hall'') is a municipal building in Poitiers, Vienne, western France, standing on Place du Maréchal-Leclerc. It was designated a ''monument historique'' by the French government in 1975. History The first municipal building in Poitiers was the alderman's office in Rue Paul Guillon which was completed in the 15th century. Following significant population growth in the mid-19th century, largely associated with the train services arriving at the newly completed Poitiers station, the council decided to redevelop the city centre. The master plan, prepared by Georges-Eugène Haussmann envisaged a triumphal route, the Rue Victor Hugo, leading up to a new town hall. Construction of the new building started in 1869 but was delayed by the Franco-Prussian War. The new building was designed by Antoine-Gaetan Guérinot in the Second Empire style, built in ashlar stone and was completed in 1875. The Umayyad invasion of Gaul, sometimes also known as the Arab invasion of France, followed the Umayyad conquest of the Iberian peninsula (711–718). The Umayyad invasion occurred in two main phases, from AD 719 and from 732. Although the Umayyads secured control of Septimania, their incursions beyond this region into the Loire and Rhône valleys failed. Louis-Ernest Barrias
Louis-Ernest Barrias (13 April 1841 – 4 February 1905) was a French sculptor of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Beaux-Arts school. In 1865 Barrias won the Prix de Rome for study at the French Academy in Rome. Barrias was involved in the decoration of the Palais Garnier, Paris Opéra and the Hôtel de la Païva in the Champs-Élysées. His work was mostly in marble, in a Romantic realist style indebted to Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. Biography He was born in Paris into a family of artists. Paul-Albert Besnard (2 June 1849 – 4 December 1934) was a French painter and printmaker.
