Hugh O'Lone
Hugh Francis "Bob" O'Lone (ca 1836 – early January, 1871) was an American-born saloon keeper and political figure in Manitoba. He was a member of the Convention of Forty and served in the Legislative Assembly of Assiniboia. His last name also appears as Olone. He was born in New York City, the son of Margaret O'Lone. In 1863, he joined the 170th New York Infantry. O'Lone took part in the defense of Washington during the American Civil War. His regiment later became part of the Army of the Potomac. He was wounded at Petersburg, Virginia and was discharged in January 1865 as captain of Company F. With two partners, O'Lone came to Portage la Prairie later that year. Portage la Prairie () is a small city in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada. In 2016, the population was 13,304 and the land area was . Portage la Prairie is approximately west of Winnipeg, along the Trans-Canada Highway (exactly halfway between the provincial boundaries of Saskatchewan and Ontario). Thomas Scott (Orangeman)
Thomas Scott (1 January 1842 – 4 March 1870) was an Irish Protestant who emigrated to Canada in 1863. While working as a labourer on the "Dawson Road Project", he moved on to Winnipeg where he met John Christian Schultz and fell under the influence of the Canadian Party. His political involvement in the Red River Settlement from then on led to his capture at Fort Garry where he was held hostage with others. On 4 March 1870 Scott was marched out of Fort Garry's east gate and was executed on the wall by the provisional government of the Red River Settlement led by Louis Riel. Scott's execution led to the Wolseley Expedition – a military force said to be sent to protect Canada from American annexation, but widely believed to confront Riel and the Métis at the Red River Settlement, authorized by Prime Minister John A.
