The House of Méndez de Sotomayor is a branch of the House of Sotomayor that rose to prominence during King Ferdinand III of Castile's reign and went on to found the Señorio del Castillo de Carpio. The house was known for its service to both the Kingdom of Castile and the Kingdom of Spain. History The House of Méndez de Sotomayor was the branch of the House of Sotomayor or Soutomaior that held title over the Señorio del Castillo de Carpio and the later Marquesado. The family was originally landed with title over Soutomaior, Province of Pontevedra, Galicia (Spain), Galicia. Indeed, this original branch of the family would reach levels of significant prominence in the early 18th century with the creation of the Ducado de Sotomayor under Fernando Yáñez de Sotomayor Lima y Brito in 1703. El Carpio
El Carpio is a city located in the province of Córdoba, Spain. According to the 2006 census ( INE), the city has a population of 4,477 inhabitants. History El Carpio was tied to the Kingdom of Castile as early as the 1300s when the Señorio del Castillo de Carpio was founded in 1325 by Garcí Méndez II de Sotomayor. The Señorio del Castillo de Carpio was elevated to the level of the Marquesado del Carpio granted by King Philip II of Spain in 1559. The title was bestowed upon Diego Lopez de Haro y Sotomayor on 20 January 1559 in recognition of his services to the crown. Señor Del Castillo De Carpio
The Lordship del Castillo del Carpio (Sp: Señorio del Castillo de Carpio or the Señorio del Carpio) was a Spanish title of nobility established in 1325 by García Méndez de Sotomayor. The title lends its name to the House of Carpio. History The lands consisting of the Señorio del Castillo de Carpio were conquered by King Ferdinand III of Castile in 1240 as a part of the larger Reconquista. Part of the lands conquered in Ferdinand III's Alcocer (Al-Qusayr) campaign were granted to one of the families that assisted in the campaign, namely the Meléndez or the House of Méndez de Sotomayor. By 1325, Garcia Méndez de Sotomayor managed to unite the lands granted to his family and built a tower at El Carpio to be used as the center of government for his lands. The tower was completed in 1325 which is also the date associated with the founding of the Señorio del Castillo de Carpio.
