Hornsby is a suburb on the North Shore (Sydney), Upper North Shore of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia, approximately north-west of the Sydney central business district. It is the administrative centre of the Local government in Australia, local government area of Hornsby Shire. History The area was initially known as "Hornsby’s Bush", after the Hornsby family, who were the early settlers. The land was primarily used for agriculture, including farming, timber cutting, and later, mining. The name Hornsby is derived from convict-turned-constable Samuel Henry Horne, who took part in the apprehension of bushrangers Dalton and MacNamara on 22 June 1830. In return he was granted land which he named Hornsby Place. The suburb of Hornsby was established on the traditional lands of the Darug and Kurringgai people. Richard Hornsby & Sons was an engine and machinery manufacturer in Grantham, Lincolnshire, Grantham, Lincolnshire, England from 1828 until 1918. The company was a pioneer in the manufacture of the Hornsby-Akroyd oil engine, oil engine developed by Herbert Akroyd Stuart, which was marketed under the ''Hornsby-Akroyd'' name. The company developed an early continuous track, track system for vehicles, selling the patent to Holt Manufacturing Company, Holt & Co. (predecessor to Caterpillar Inc.) in America. Ruston & Hornsby was an industrial equipment manufacturer in Lincoln, England founded in 1918. The company is best known as a manufacturer of Narrow-gauge railway, narrow and Standard-gauge railway, standard gauge diesel locomotives and also of steam shovels. Other products included cars, steam locomotives and a range of internal combustion engines, and later gas turbines. Hornsby is a tiny lunar impact crater in the western part of the Mare Serenitatis, a lunar mare in the northeast quadrant of the Moon's near side. It was named after British astronomer Thomas Hornsby. It is a solitary formation that is located at least 100 kilometers from any significant craters, although the curiously shaped depression Aratus CA lies about 50 km to the west-northwest. Hornsby, Tennessee
Hornsby is a town in Hardeman County and McNairy County, Tennessee. The population was 303 at the 2010 census. The town is just east of Bolivar along U.S. Highway 64. History Before 1820, Dr. Daniel Smith Webb started a gristmill and sawmill along the Little Hatchie River in Wade Creek Valley. The area would come to be known as Webb's Mill, and in the 1820s, Joel and William Crain, two Revolutionary veterans, moved to the area and founded a port and supply depot near Webb's Mill. The area would eventually have a two churches, a subscription school, a stagecoach stop and an inn between Bolivar and Purdy. This town would be called Crainville. Crainville would become a railroad town in the early 1900s and a new train depot was built by the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad on a farm owned by Kimborough Hornsby.
