A-18 Shrike
The Curtiss A-18 ''Model 76A Shrike II'' was a 1930s United States twin-engine ground-attack aircraft. It was the production test version of Curtiss' A-14 Shrike. Design and development In the years leading up to World War II, the United States Army Air Corps were interested in attack aircraft capable of carrying larger bomb loads with greater firepower. The attack aircraft design standard essentially became a light bomber with firepower only slightly less than the medium bombers being developed as the standard machine gun generally was replaced by ones on new aircraft in development.McCullough, Anson. "Grind 'Em Out Ground Attack: The Search for the Elusive Fighter Bomber." ''Wings, Vol. 25, No. 4, August 1995''. The Curtiss YA-14 prototype that emerged in 1935 was one of the first single-mission attack aircraft. Although it looked purposeful with its slender fuselage, thin nose, and sleek streamlining, the A-14 was hampered by a lack of power, despite its two Wright Whir ...

Three-letter Acronym
A three-letter acronym (TLA), or three-letter abbreviation is, as the phrase suggests, an abbreviation consisting of three letters. The term has a special status among abbreviations and to some is considered humorous since the term ''TLA'' is itself a three-letter acronym; it is an autological word. Most TLAs are initialisms (the initial letter of each word of a phrase), but most are not acronyms in the strict sense since they are pronounced by saying each letter, as in '' APA'' . Some are true acronyms (pronounced as a word) such as CAT (as in CAT scan) which is pronounced as the animal. Examples * Academic testing: ACT, SAT * Air Navigation Services ( ANS): AIS, ATC, ATM, ATS, CNS, FIS, MET, and SAR * IATA airport codes: LAX and LHR * Business: CEO, CFO, and other C-level officers * Canine registries: AKC and CKC * Chemistry, biology, and pharmaceuticals: GMO, LSD, and MSG * Clinical medicine: CAD, CHF, PSA, and SOB * Communications shorthand: LOL ...

English Opening
The English Opening is a chess opening that begins with the move: : 1. c4 A flank opening, it is the fourth most popular and, according to various databases, one of the four most successful of White's twenty possible first moves. White begins the fight for the by staking a claim to the d5-square from the wing, in hypermodern style. Although many lines of the English have a distinct character, the opening is often used as a transpositional device in much the same way as 1.Nf3 – to avoid such highly regarded responses to 1.d4 as the Nimzo-Indian and Grünfeld Defences – and is considered reliable and flexible. History of the opening The English derives its name from the leading 19th-century English master Howard Staunton, who played it during his 1843 match with Saint-Amant and at London 1851, the first international tournament. It did not inspire Staunton's contemporaries and caught on only in the twentieth century. It is now recognised as a opening that may be u ...

Rhodopsin-like Receptors
Rhodopsin-like receptors are a protein family, family of proteins that comprise the largest group of G protein-coupled receptors. Scope G-protein-coupled receptors, GPCRs, constitute a vast protein family that encompasses a wide range of functions (including various autocrine, paracrine, and endocrine processes). They show considerable diversity at the sequence level, on the basis of which they can be separated into distinct groups. GPCRs are usually described as "superfamily" because they embrace a group of protein family, families for which there are indications of evolutionary relationship, but between which there is no statistically significant similarity in sequence. The currently known superfamily members include the rhodopsin-like GPCRs (this family), the secretin-like GPCRs, the cAMP receptors, the fungal mating pheromone receptors, and the metabotropic glutamate receptor family. There is a specialised database for G protein-coupled receptors database, GPCRs. Function ...
