Hong Kong Watch
Hong Kong Watch is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in the United Kingdom that was established to monitor the conditions of human rights, freedoms and rule of law in Hong Kong. It was founded by British human rights activist Benedict Rogers on 11 December 2017, two months after he was barred from entering Hong Kong. History In the aftermath of the 2014 Hong Kong protests and Legislative Council oath-taking controversy, Benedict Rogers, a British human rights activist, intended to visit a group of imprisoned Hong Kong democracy activists. On 11 October 2017, Rogers was barred entry to Hong Kong. He arrived at Hong Kong International Airport on a flight from Bangkok but was escorted away by immigration officials and placed on a flight back to Thailand. He had previously been warned by a contact in the Chinese embassy in London that he might be refused entry to Hong Kong. Benedict Richard Victor Rogers (, born 14 June 1974) is a British human rights activist and journalist based in London. His work focuses on Asia, particularly Burma, North Korea, Indonesia, the Maldives, East Timor, Pakistan and Hong Kong. He is a regular contributor to ''The Wall Street Journal'', ''The New York Times'' and ''The Huffington Post'' and has appeared on BBC, CNN, Sky, Al Jazeera and other television and radio stations. He is the co-founder and deputy chairman of the Conservative Party's human rights commission and the co-founder of the International Coalition to Stop Crimes Against Humanity in North Korea. Joshua Wong
Joshua Wong Chi-fung (; born 13 October 1996) is a Hong Kong Pro-democracy camp (Hong Kong), pro-democracy activist and politician. He served as secretary-general of the pro-democracy party Demosisto, Demosistō until it disbanded following implementation of the 2020 Hong Kong national security law, Hong Kong national security law on 30 June 2020. Wong was previously convenor and founder of the Hong Kong student activist group Scholarism. Luke De Pulford
Luke John de Pulford (, born 18 August 1984) is a human rights campaigner, particularly in the areas of modern slavery and human rights abuses in China. In 2015, de Pulford co-founded Arise, which he led until 2022. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, which he co-founded with leading legislators from eight legislatures in 2020. De Pulford is also co-founder of the Coalition for Genocide Response, sits as a Commissioner on the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission, advises the World Uyghur Congress, and is the trustee of several charities. Sino-British Joint Declaration
The Sino-British Joint Declaration was a treaty between the governments of the United Kingdom and People's Republic of China signed in 1984 setting the conditions in which Hong Kong was transferred to Chinese control and for the governance of the territory after 1 July 1997. Hong Kong had been a colony of the British Empire since 1842 after the First Opium War and its territory was expanded on two occasions; first in 1860 with the addition of Kowloon Peninsula and Stonecutters Island, and again in 1898 when Britain obtained a 99-year lease for the New Territories. The date of the handover in 1997 marked the end of this lease. The Chinese government declared in the treaty its basic policies for governing Hong Kong after the transfer. Human Rights In Hong Kong
Human rights protection is enshrined in the Hong Kong Basic Law, Basic Law and its Bill of Rights Ordinance (Cap.383).
