Hong Kong College Of Medicine
The University of Hong Kong Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine (branded as HKUMed) is the medical school of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), a public research university. It was founded in 1887 as the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, one of the oldest western medical schools in the Asia–Pacific region, and which served as the base for HKU's founding in 1910. The faculty consists of several schools and departments that provide tertiary programmes in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and Chinese medicine. English is the medium of instruction for all classes, while Chinese is retained for the teaching of Chinese medicine. It is located several kilometres away from the university's main campus and is near the Queen Mary Hospital, its main teaching facility and research base. Gregory Paul Jordan
Gregory Paul Jordan (died 4 December 1921) was a British-Indian doctor and educator of Armenian descent. He served in various medical positions throughout colonial British Hong Kong, and was involved with various medical and educational institutions in the territory. Early life and education Gregory Paul Jordan was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), a nephew of British-Indian property magnate Paul Chater. Jordan graduated from Edinburgh University in 1880 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Medicine, Master of Surgery degree. He then studied in Vienna and Paris, before receiving a Royal College of Surgeons of England, Diploma of Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) in 1884. Patrick Manson
Sir Patrick Manson (3 October 1844 – 9 April 1922) was a Scottish physician who made important discoveries in parasitology, and was a founder of the field of tropical medicine. He graduated from the University of Aberdeen with degrees in Master of Surgery, Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of law, Doctor of Law. His medical career spanned mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan Island, Taiwan and London. He discovered that filariasis in humans is transmitted by mosquitoes. This is the foundation of modern tropical medicine, and he is recognized with an epithet "Father of Tropical Medicine". This also made him the first person to show pathogen transmission by a blood-feeding arthropod. His discovery directly invoked the mosquito-malaria theory, which became the foundation in malariology. James Cantlie
Sir James Cantlie (17 January 1851 – 28 May 1926) was a British physician. He was a pioneer of first aid, which in 1875 was unknown: even the police had no knowledge of basic techniques such as how to stop serious bleeding and applying splints. He was also influential in the study of tropical diseases and in the debates concerning degeneration theory. Life Cantlie was born in Banffshire and took his first degree at Aberdeen University, carrying out his clinical training at Charing Cross Hospital, London. In 1877, Cantlie became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and Assistant Surgeon to Charing Cross Hospital. Kai Ho
Sir Kai Ho (; 21 March 1859 – 21 July 1914), better known as Sir Kai Ho Kai and born Ho Shan-kai (), was a Hong Kong barrister, physician and essayist in colonial Hong Kong. He played a key role in the relationship between the Hong Kong local community and the British colonial government. He is remembered as a supporter of the Reform Movement and as a teacher of Sun Yat-sen, who would become the founding father of the Republic of China. Hong Kong University Press (abbreviated as HKU Press) is the university press of the University of Hong Kong. It was established in 1956 and publishes more than 50 titles per year in both Chinese and English. Most works in English are on cultural studies, film and media studies, Chinese history and culture. Brief Hong Kong University Press was established in 1956. At the beginning of the establishment, the press mainly published several books on studies done by the university's own faculty every year. It now releases between 30 and 60 new titles a year.
