Hon'inbō Shūhaku (本因坊秀伯, 1716–1741) was a Japanese professional go player and seventh head of Hon'inbō house. His succession to his short-lived predecessor, in 1733, was irregular, since he had not been officially adopted as heir. He also died young, after a period of intrigue. A Go professional is a professional player of the game of Go. The minimum standard to acquire a professional diploma through one of the major Go organisations is very high. The competition is tremendous, and prize incentives for champion players are very large. For example, the Honinbo Tournament has a grand prize of about $350,000. Almost all professional players are from China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. This is because until recently, only China ( China Qiyuan), Japan (Nihon Ki-in, Kansai Ki-in), South Korea ( Korea Baduk Association (Hanguk Gi-Won)), and Taiwan (Taiwan Chi Yuan Culture Foundation) had professional Go organizations. In 2012, the AGA Professional System was established in the United States. In 2014, the EGF professional system was established in Europe. Honinbo (or Hon'inbō, 本因坊) is a title used by the head of the Honinbo house or the winner of the Honinbo tournament. Honinbo house The Honinbo house was a school of Go players officially founded in 1612 and discontinued in 1940. The founder was the Buddhist priest Nikkai, and 1612 is the year when Oda Nobunaga started sponsoring the school. The name Honinbo was that of the pavilion on the grounds of the Jakkoji temple in Kyoto where Nikkai lived. When the capital was moved to Tokyo, Nikkai moved along and turned "Honinbo" into a title, calling himself Honinbo Sansa.
