William Holabird
William Holabird (September 11, 1854 – July 19, 1923) was an American architect. Biography Holabird was born on September 11, 1854, in Amenia, New York, the son of General Samuel B. Holabird and Mary Theodosia Grant. He studied at the United States Military Academy at West Point but resigned and moved to Chicago, where he later got married. He worked in the architectural practice of William Le Baron Jenney next to O. C. Simonds. Shortly after receiving the commission to extend Graceland Cemetery, Jenney passed it on to his assistants who, in 1880, established the firm of Holabird & Simonds to carry out this job. In 1881, Martin Roche, who had also worked in Jenney's office, joined them as a third partner. In 1883, the firm was renamed Holabird & Roche after Simonds left to concentrate solely on Graceland Cemetery and landscape design. John Augur Holabird
John Augur Holabird (May 4, 1886 – May 4, 1945) was an American architect based in Chicago. Biography Holabird was born in Evanston, Illinois on May 4, 1886, the son of architect William Holabird. He was educated at The Hill School, then trained as an engineer, graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1907, with further study at the Washington Barracks Engineering School in 1909. By 1913, he had completed study at Paris' École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, École des Beaux-Arts, where he became friends with John Wellborn Root Jr., the son of another famous Chicago architect. Holabird's father had formed the architectural firm Holabird & Roche in Chicago in 1883, and the younger Holabird joined the firm in 1914. Katharine Holabird (born January 23, 1948) is an American writer, best known as the author of the '' Angelina Ballerina'' series, illustrated by Helen Craig, and the ''Twinkle'' series, illustrated by Sarah Warburton. Early life and education Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the second of four daughters, Holabird grew up in an artistic home in Chicago, and her family spent many summers in Michigan. In 1969, she received a B.A. in literature from Bennington College in Vermont and then worked at Bennington College as a literary editor for a year after her graduation. Career Holabird then found herself in Italy as a freelance journalist where she met her husband, Michael Haggiag. The two married in 1974 and moved to London, where she continued to write and worked at a nursery school. She has two daughters, Tara and Alexandra.
