Athletic Bilbao is a Spanish football club from Bilbao, Biscay in the Basque Country (autonomous community), Basque Country. In addition to winning several La Liga, national league titles and Copa del Rey, domestic cups since their formation around the start of the 20th century, the club is perhaps best known for their Athletic Bilbao signing policy, policy of only signing players who have some link to their home territory, and for being one of only three clubs to have participated in every league season without being relegated, despite the restrictions of the policy. Athletic Club (; ), commonly known as Athletic Bilbao (), or simply Athletic, is a professional Football club (association football), football club based in the city of Bilbao in the Southern Basque Country, Basque Country, Spain. They are known as ''Lehoiak'' (The Lions) because their stadium was built near a church called ''San Mamés'', which was named after Saint Mammes of Caesarea, Saint Mammes, an early Christian thrown to the lions by the Roman Empire, Romans. Bilbao Football Club was a football team based in Bilbao, Spain, which existed during the years 1900 and 1903. In 1902 they combined with city rivals Athletic Club to form ''Club Vizcaya'', a team which won the 1902 Copa de la Coronación. The following year they were absorbed by Athletic Club. History Background Football arrived in Bilbao at the end of the 19th century, thanks to British visiting sailors and immigrant workers, such as the British employees of the Nervión Shipyards, located in Sestao ( Vizcaya), who in 1889 formed a multi-sports club called ''Club Atleta''. Manuel Ángel Juan Bautista de Castellanos Jacquet was a Spanish engineer and Association football, footballer and the 12th president of Athletic Bilbao between 1929 and 1933. Luis Márquez Marmolejo (1876 – 1930) was a Spanish football executive who was the first-ever president of Athletic Club. Eduardo María Montejo Aristegui (15 August 1879 – 14 April 1962) was a Spanish footballer who played as a forward for Athletic Club. José Enrique Niceto Goiri Bayo (1 March 1877 - 3 April 1925) was a Spanish footballer who played as a midfielder for Athletic Club. Alejandro Acha Bárcena (22 July 1878 – 16 December 1917) was a Spanish footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Athletic Club. He was one of the most important footballers in the amateur beginnings of Athletic Bilbao, being among the 7 founders of the club in 1898, and then serving the club as a secretary and as its first goalkeeper, winning the 1903 Copa del Rey, the first official national championship. Juan "Juanito" José Astorquia Landabaso (June 1876 – 23 October 1905) was a Spanish footballer who played as a forward for Athletic Bilbao.
