Hip-hop Dance
Hip hop dance is a range of street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop, hip hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture, hip hop culture. It is influenced by a wide range of styles that were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. The television show ''Soul Train'' and the 1980s films ''Breakin''', ''Beat Street'', and ''Wild Style'' showcased these crews and dance styles in their early stages; therefore, giving hip-hop dance mainstream exposure. The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based version of hip-hop—sometimes called "new style"—and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance called "jazz-funk". Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. Hip-hop culture is an art movement that emerged in New York City, in the borough of The Bronx; Primarily within the black community. Hip Hop as an art form and culture has been heavily influenced by both male and female artists. It is characterized by the key elements of rapping, Disc jockey, DJing and turntablism, and breakdancing; other elements include graffiti, beatboxing, street entrepreneurship, hip hop language, and hip-hop fashion. Many cite Hip Hop's emergence as beginning in August 1973 when brother–sister duo DJ Kool Herc and Cindy Campbell hosted the first documented indoor hip hop party and culture event in the Bronx; Helping to spark the rise of the genre. ''The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers'', commonly called ''The LXD'', is an American web series that premiered on Hulu. The series follows two groups of rival dancers: the Alliance of the Dark, who are the villains, and the Legion of Extraordinary Dancers, the heroes, who discover they have superpowers referred to as "the Ra" through their dance abilities. ''America's Best Dance Crew'', often abbreviated as ''ABDC'', is an American competitive dance reality television series featuring both national and international dance crews. The show was produced by singer, record producer, and former ''American Idol'' judge Randy Jackson. The series premiered on February 7, 2008, on MTV. It was originally developed for NBC as ''World Moves''. The show was hosted by actor Mario Lopez and featured television personality Layla Kayleigh as the backstage correspondent. ''The Grind'' was a dance music show broadcast on the cable television station MTV between 1992 and 1997. It replaced '' Club MTV'', and featured people dancing to music tracks in a studio, linked by various hosts, including Eric Nies (fresh from '' The Real World: New York'') and DJ Jackie Christie. While ''Club MTV'' was mostly dance, house and freestyle, ''The Grind'' featured hip hop with an occasional dance hit. The show spawned a number of aerobics and workout videotapes. When MTV moved to its current location at 1515 Broadway, they lost the studio where ''Club MTV'' and ''The Grind'' were originally taped and episodes were taped on the roof of the building.
