Hindley ( ) is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester, England. It is east of Wigan and covers an area of . Within the boundaries of the Historic counties of England, historic county of Lancashire, Hindley (which includes Hindley Green) borders the towns and villages of Ince-in-Makerfield, Aspull, Westhoughton, Atherton, Greater Manchester, Atherton and Westleigh, Greater Manchester, Westleigh in the former borough of Leigh, Greater Manchester, Leigh. Hindley, Northumberland
Hindley is a small hamlet, comprising around 20 residences. It is in the parish of Stocksfield and is just to the south of Stocksfield in Northumberland with Broomley to the west and Whittonstall to the east. It is south of the River Tyne. Hindley is composed of a large house, Hindley Hall (now split up into three houses and four flats), a farm (now converted into residences) and a post box. History Hindley is likely to have developed from a farm due to its close proximity to Dere Street (a Roman road between York and into Scotland, passing through nearby Corbridge). Local records have that in 1296 there were two poll-tax payers, a Shepard and a Smith. The first dated reference to Hindley is dated 25 April 1232, and is an agreement between Sir William de Hindley and Robert de St. Jerman regarding land near Midhope. Hindley School is one of the 5 elementary schools in Darien, Connecticut, serving roughly 550 pupils from kindergarten through Grade 5. HM Prison Hindley
HM Prison Hindley is an adult male prison located in the village of Bickershaw (near Wigan) in Greater Manchester, England and operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. History In 1961, Hindley Prison opened as a Borstal. In 1983 it was re-classified as a Youth Custody Centre. Hindley was then re-classified as an adult prison. In 1997 it became a joint prison and Young Offenders Institution. In 2002, His Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons recorded many good initiatives taking place at Hindley, particularly in suicide prevention, drugs strategy, sentence planning and joint work with the police service to monitor and act on racial incidents. However the Inspector criticised inadequate reception procedures, insufficient purposeful activity and patchy help with resettlement at the prison.
