Herne Bay Pier
Herne Bay Pier was the third pier to be built at Herne Bay, Kent for passenger paddle steamer, steamers. It was notable for its exceptional length of and made famous after appearing in the opening sequence of Ken Russell's first feature film French Dressing (1964 film), ''French Dressing''. Herne Bay Pier suffered extensive damage in a 1978 storm, leading to much of it being dismantled in 1980, leaving only a pier-stub at the landward end, and part of the berth (moorings), landing stage isolated at sea. The two previous piers built on the same location included a wooden deep-sea pier designed by Thomas Rhodes, assistant of Thomas Telford, and a second shorter iron version by Wilkinson & Smith. Herne Bay railway station is on the Chatham Main Line in England, serving the town of Herne Bay, Kent. It is down the line from and is situated between and . The station and all trains that serve the station are operated by Southeastern. History Constructed by the Herne Bay and Faversham Railway Company, the first station originally opened in 1861 as "Herne Bay and Hampton-on-Sea" as the terminus of a line from Faversham; however, this station was a temporary one, located just west of where Greenhill Bridge is now situated. The line was extended to Ramsgate on 5 October 1863, roughly when the current station was brought into use. The line was worked by the London, Chatham & Dover Railway which acquired the Herne Bay Company in 1871.
