The Hawkes Children's Libraries were a series of libraries inspired by Albert King Hawkes (1848–1916) of Atlanta, Georgia who desired children's libraries and theaters in Georgia's towns. At least three survive and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Albert King Hawkes
Albert King Hawkes (June 1848 – November 1916) was an optometrist, inventor, and philanthropist and proponent of children's libraries in rural Georgia towns. Several Hawkes Children's Library buildings were constructed from his advocacy and charitable work. Some of the libraries included theaters. Hawkes planned to build 100 new libraries in Georgia. He helped fund several in his will. The Hawkes Children's Library of West Point and Hawkes Children's Library (Cedartown, Georgia) are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hawkes Children's Library (West Point, Georgia)
The Hawkes Children's Library in West Point, Georgia was built in 1922. It is one of the Hawkes Children's Library buildings inspired and funded with support from Albert King Hawkes, who funded six children's libraries in rural towns throughout Georgia. The building is a work of architectural and engineering firm Robert & Co. and was constructed by Batson & Cook. It includes Colonial Revival and Georgian Revival architecture. The library was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The library is located along the Chattahoochee River in West Point. It contains historical information for Troup County, Georgia and Chambers County, Alabama. The library also hosts educational and arts programs. Joseph Neel Reid (October 23, 1885 – February 14, 1926), also referred to as Neel Reid, was a prominent architect in Atlanta, Georgia, in the early 20th century as a partner in his firm Hentz, Reid and Adler. Early life Reid was born in Jacksonville, Alabama, Jacksonville, Alabama, in 1885. He moved to Macon, Georgia, Macon, Georgia, with his family in 1890.Mitchell, William. ''J. Neel Reid Architect.''
