Hardman Earle
Sir Hardman Earle, 1st Baronet (11 July 1792 – 25 January 1877) was a British railway director and slave owner. Earle owned plantations and enslaved people in what is now modern-day Guyana. He bought shares in the Liverpool to Manchester railway line and became a director of the company, which later amalgamated into the London and North Western Railway. Early life Earle was born on 11 July 1792. He was the fourth son of the slave trader, Thomas Earle. He was named after Sir John Hardman, an MP, slaver and owner of Allerton Hall. Earle attended Charterhouse School, then located in Charterhouse Square, London. Sir Samuel Hardman Lever, 1st Baronet, KCB (18 April 1869 – 1 July 1947), generally known as Sir Hardman Lever, and as "Sammie" to his friends, was an English accountant and civil servant. Lever was born in Bootle, Lancashire, and was educated at Merchant Taylors' School. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1890. He worked as an accountant in Liverpool, New York City and London. In August 1915, he was appointed Assistant Financial Secretary at the Ministry of Munitions, where he was in charge of contracts and finance. At the end of 1916, he was appointed Financial Secretary to the Treasury, usually a political office, and nominally held the post until 1921. From 1917 he held the post jointly with Stanley Baldwin and after 1919 left most of the duties to the latter. The Hardmans' House, at 59 Rodney Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, England, is a National Trust property and home of the "E. Chambré Hardman Studio, House & Photographic Collection". Hardman is a historic community located in southern Morrow County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is on Oregon Route 207 about southwest of Heppner and north of Spray. Rock Creek, a tributary of the Columbia River, flows northwest by Hardman and to its south to meet the river at Lake Umatilla. A former social and commercial center for surrounding farm communities, Hardman became a ghost town following the completion of a railroad to Heppner in the 1920s.
