''Hangman's Noose'' (French: ''Le collier de chanvre'') is a 1940 French mystery film directed by Léon Mathot and starring Jacqueline Delubac, André Luguet and Annie Vernay.Oscherwitz & Higgins p.279 It is based on the 1932 novel ''Rope to Spare'' by Philip MacDonald about the detective Anthony Gethryn and is set in England. The film's sets were designed by the art director Émile Duquesne. Léon Mathot
Léon Mathot (5 March 1886, Roubaix, Nord-Pas-de-Calais - 6 March 1968, in Paris) was a French film actor and film director best known perhaps for playing Edmond Dantes in ''The Count of Monte Cristo (1918 series), The Count of Monte Cristo'' serial (film), film serial in 1918. He appeared in the 1923 silent film ''Coeur fidèle'', directed by Jean Epstein. He starred in some 60 films mostly in silent film between 1906 and 1939. He turned director in 1927 whilst still appearing in several films and retired in 1953 directing well over 20 films. Marcel Carpentier
Marcel Maurice Carpentier (; 2 March 1895 – 14 September 1977) was a French Army general who served in World War I, World War II, and the First Indochina War. Early life Born on 2 March 1895 in Marseille, he was the eldest son in his family. At 18 he entered the French military academy of Saint-Cyr, in August 1914 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant, less than a year later he was the youngest captain in the French Army at only 20, he started training to become a pilot. During the First World War he was wounded multiple times. Military career In 1937 he was (chief of staff) of the of Levantine Troops. From 1940-1941 he served under Jean de Lattre de Tassigny as chief of staff of the commander in chief of North Africa at the headquarters of Vichy French forces in Tunisia. Georges Grey
Georges Grey, born Georges-Jean-Joseph Gacon (1911–1954) was a French actor. In 1948 he starred in the film '' The Lame Devil'' under Sacha Guitry. Biography He studied engineering at university, before going to the Saumur Cavalry School. He then went to Paris to begin a career as an actor, where he was noticed by Sacha Guitry who began giving him roles in his films. He toured with Marcel Pagnol and Gilles Grangier later on in life. He died of tuberculosis in a sanatorium on April 2, 1954, in Passy.
