Handball At The 2012 Summer Olympics
The handball tournaments at the 2012 Olympic Games in London was held from 28 July to 12 August in the Olympic Park. Preliminary rounds and the quarter-finals were held in the Copper Box while the semi-finals and final took place in the larger Basketball Arena. Medals were awarded in a men's tournament and a women's tournament. The gold medals were won by France (men) and Norway (women). Basketball Arena (London)
The Basketball Arena for the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics was located in the Olympic Park, London, Olympic Park in Stratford, London, Stratford, London. The arena was designed to be fully recyclable, and was dismantled in January 2013, the seating was sold to Barnet F.C., Barnet owner Tony Kleanthous to be used in the construction of The Hive Stadium. Bertrand Gille (handballer)
Bertrand Fabien Gille (born 24 March 1978 in Valence, Drôme) is a retired handball player from France. Very strong physically (1.87m, 98 kg), and was honored with the title of World Player of the Year in 2002. Barachet has been made an Officer of the Ordre national du Mérite. Career His career as a handball player started very early: in 1984, he played for HBC Loriol and followed sport étude as a scholastic path. From 1996 to 2002, he played for Chambéry SH (under the guidance of Philippe Gardent, another famous French handball player) before joining the German club HSV Hamburg. In 2012 he returned to Chambéry. He retired in 2015. Member of the national team since 1997, "Gilou" was again pivot on the team which, among others, won the handball competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he was also named best pivot of the tournament. Guillaume Gille
Guillaume Alain Gille (born 12 July 1976) is a retired French handballer and current coach of the French national team. He was the winner of the gold medal at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics and is the older brother of Bertrand Gille. Career Gille's career as a handballer began early. Already in 1984, he was playing for HBC Loriol, followed by a sport étude. From 1996 to 2002, he played for Chambéry SH, before joining HSV Hamburg in the Bundesliga. At Hamburg he won the 2006 DHB-Pokal. In 2012 he returned to Chambéry. He retired in 2015. He has been playing with his brother, Bertrand Gille, since their childhood and they played together for their entire career. At Chámbery they also played with their third brother, Benjamin Gille. Xavier Barachet
Xavier Barachet (born 19 November 1988) is a French retired handball player, two-time World champion and European champion with the France men's national handball team, French national team. On 1 January 2013, Barachet was made a Knight (Chevalier) of the Légion d'honneur. Career Barachet started at Cavigal Nice Sports HB and joined Chambéry Savoie Handball in the Ligue Nationale de Handball in 2006. In 2012 he joined Spanish side BM Neptuno, Atlético Madrid. Here he played for a single season, in which he won the Copa del Rey de Balonmano. Due to financial troubles for the club, he returned to France a year later and signed for Paris Saint-Germain Handball, Paris Saint-Germain. Didier Dinart
Didier Dinart (born 18 January 1977) is a French retired handball player and current coach of US Ivry Handball and the Montenegro national team. He was included in the European Handball Federation Hall of Fame in 2023. During his playing days, he played for the internationally renowned BM Ciudad Real handball team in Spain (where he was partner to, among others, Luc Abalo). Before joining BM Ciudad Real, he played for Montpellier HB of which is currently one of the best French clubs. He was a highly skilled defensive player, and is widely regarded as one of the world's best handball defensive players. Jérôme Fernandez (born 7 March 1977) is a French handball coach and former handball player. He was a captain of the France men's national handball team and currently holds the record for the number of goals for France's national team (1,463 through 9 January 2020). 2011 World Women's Handball Championship
The 2011 World Women's Handball Championship was the 20th edition of the international championship tournament in women's Team sport handball that is governed by the International Handball Federation (IHF). Brazil hosted the event from 2–18 December 2011. On 18 December 2011, Norway successfully contested France 32–24 in the final. Norway was the second team to achieve a triple title cache all in the same tournament by winning the World Championship, European Championship and Olympic Games titles. Denmark had made this achievement previously. France lost, its second consecutive World Championship final (2009), to Russia. Norway automatically qualified for the 2012 Olympic Handball tournament and 2013 World Championship.
