Handball At The 2004 Summer Olympics
Handball at the 2004 Summer Olympics included a men's and a women's team competitions with the preliminary rounds taking place in the Sports Pavilion at the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex. From the quarter final stage onwards, the women's event moved to the Helliniko Olympic Indoor Arena, a part of the Helliniko Olympic Complex, with the men joining them there for their semi-finals and final. The men's Handball event first made an appearance, played outside, at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany but did not then re-appear until the Games returned to Germany for the Munich Olympics in 1972 since when it has been ever present. The women's game debuted in Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the 1976 Summer Olympics and again has been ever present since. Sports Pavilion (Faliro)
The Faliro Sports Pavilion Arena, which is part of the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex, is an indoor arena in the suburban town of Palaio Faliro, Greece. It is nicknamed "The Little Peace And Friendship Stadium", due to its similarity in design and close proximity to the Peace and Friendship Stadium. It was the site of the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics preliminary matches of handball, as well as the taekwondo competition. The arena seats 8,536 for handball matches of 2004 Olympics, though only 3,836 seats were made publicly available during the Olympics. History The arena was completed on December 20, 2003, and it officially opened on August 12, 2004, shortly before the 2004 Olympics began. Venio Losert
Venio Losert (born 25 July 1976) is a Croatian former handball player who played as a goalkeeper. He is currently the goalkeeping coach of Egypt and Al Ahly. Losert was born in Zavidovići, SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, grew up in Slavonski Brod, SR Croatia. Winning the first medal at the age of 19 at 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, when Croatia won the first gold medal as an independent nation, he is considered the youngest debutant of the team. Losert was also a member of the golden national handball team that won first place at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Henning Fritz (born 21 September 1974) is a German retired handball goalkeeper, current entrepreneur, book author and TV expert. Markus Baur (born 22 January 1971) is a German handball coach and former player. Born in Meersburg, he is a member of the Germany national team since 1994, making his debut against Morocco on 4 August in Balingen.
