Hanau
Hanau () is a city in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis, in Hesse, Germany. It is 25 km east of Frankfurt, Frankfurt am Main and part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main, Frankfurt Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region. Its railway Hanau Hauptbahnhof, station is a major junction and it has a port on the river Main (river), Main, making it an important transport centre. The city is known for being the birthplace of Brothers Grimm, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm and Franciscus Sylvius. Since the 16th century it was a centre of precious metal working, with many goldsmiths. It is home to Heraeus, one of Germany's largest family-owned companies. Once the seat of the Counts of Hanau, Hanau lost much of its architectural heritage in World War II, such as its Stadtschloss Hanau, City Palace. A British air raid in 1945 created a firestorm, killing a sixth of the remaining population and destroying 98% of the old city and 80% of the city overall. Stadtschloss Hanau
The Hanau City Palace () is a former castle and palace in Hanau, Hesse, in Germany. It was the residence palace of the County of Hanau, Counts of Hanau and later a secondary residence of the Electorate of Hesse, Electors of Hesse. The City Palace was also known as the Old Town Palace () or later as the Electoral Palace (). It developed from a medieval castle complex, which was largely demolished in the 19th century, leaving only a few remnants. During the Second World War, the palace was severely damaged and subsequently mostly torn down, although it could easily have been reconstructed. As a result, only a few auxiliary buildings of the former residence remain today. While there are only sparse sources regarding the appearance of the medieval castle, the various construction phases from the 16th century onwards can be reconstructed from documents and older depictions. Hanau Shootings
The Hanau shootings () occurred on 19 February 2020, when nine people were killed and five others wounded in a terrorist shooting spree by a far-right extremist targeting three bars and a kiosk in Hanau, near Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany. After the attacks the gunman, identified as Tobias Rathjen, returned to his apartment, where he killed his mother and then committed suicide. The massacre was called an act of terrorism by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community, German Minister of Internal Affairs. Shootings The shootings began in central Hanau at 21:55:43 Central European Time, CET (UTC+1) on the night of 19 February 2020. The attacker entered the La Votre Bar on Heumarkt and fired multiple shots from a CZ 75 pistol, killing a bartender. Hanau Hauptbahnhof
Hanau Hauptbahnhof is a railway station in Hanau in the German state of Hesse, and is a major railway junction east of Frankfurt am Main. It was opened in 1867, but the current building was built in the late 1960s. It is located about south-east of central Hanau. Kinzig (Main)
The Kinzig () is a river, 87 kilometres long, in southern Hesse, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Main (river), Main. Its source is in the Spessart hills at Sterbfritz, near Schlüchtern. The Kinzig flows into the Main in Hanau. The Main-Kinzig-Kreis (district) was named after the river. The towns along the Kinzig are Schlüchtern, Steinau an der Straße, Bad Soden-Salmünster, Gelnhausen, and Hanau. The Kinzig is first recorded in 815 A.D. as ''Chinzicha''. Main-Kinzig-Kreis is a Kreis (district) in the east of Hesse, Germany. Neighboring districts are Wetteraukreis, Vogelsbergkreis, Fulda, Bad Kissingen, Main-Spessart, Aschaffenburg, Offenbach and the district-free cities of Offenbach and Frankfurt. Großauheim
Großauheim (13,369 inhabitants, without Wolfgang 11,669) is the largest district of Hanau, Hesse, Germany, on the north bank of the Main. It was first mentioned in 806 under the name "Ewichheim". It was a farming village until the end of the 19th century but during the 20th century, numerous branches of industry settled there. The Hanau Port built in 1924 is mainly in Großauheim. In 1956, Großauheim was made a free town. In 1972, Großauheim included Wolfgang but due to the Hessian regional reform, Großauheim and Wolfgang were incorporated into Hanau in July 1974. |
Franciscus Sylvius
Franciscus Sylvius (, ; born Franz de le Boë; 15 March 1614 – 19 November 1672) was a Dutch physician and scientist (chemist, physiologist and anatomist) who was an early champion of Descartes', Van Helmont's and William Harvey's work and theories. He was one of the earliest defenders of the theory of circulation of the blood in the Netherlands, and commonly falsely cited as the inventor of gin – others pinpoint the origin of gin to Italy.
