Hale Brothers Department Store (Hale Bros., Hales's, or Hale Brothers and Company), was a department store headquartered in Sacramento, California, with branches throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. One of the former store locations at 979–989 Market Street in the Market Street Theatre and Loft District (Mid-Market) of San Francisco is listed as a U.S. National Register of Historic Place. History Marshal Hale Sr. (b. Vermont, 1809) had been a merchant first in New York State, growing his business to a five store chain, and later in Michigan. In November 1873, Hale Sr. came to San Jose, California, with his wife and six of his nine children and in 1876 founded a 3,600-square-foot store there together with his sons Oliver Ambrose Hale and Evert W. Broadway Stores
Broadway Stores, Inc., was an American retailer based in Southern California. Known through its history as Carter Hawley Hale Stores and Broadway Hale Stores over time, it acquired other retail store chains in regions outside its California home base and became in certain retail sectors a regional and national retailer in the 1970s and 1980s. The company was able to survive takeover attempts in 1984 and 1986, and also a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 1991 by selling off most of its assets until August 1995 when its banks refused to advance enough additional credit in order for the company to be able to pay off suppliers. K Street is a historic street in Sacramento, California, United States. It spans from Old Sacramento, through Downtown Sacramento and Midtown Sacramento, ending in East Sacramento. Weinstock's, originally Weinstock, Lubin, and Co., was an American department store chain headquartered in Sacramento, California. It was founded by Harris Weinstock and his half-brother, David Lubin. The first location opened in 1874 on the corner of Fourth and K Streets. One of the most famous Weinstock's locations, in Sacramento, opened on November 24, 1891. The chain was purchased by Hale's in 1949, becoming part of Broadway-Hale Stores, later Carter Hawley Hale. In 1978, Weinstock's expanded into Utah by rebranding its sister chain The Broadway's location at Fashion Place in Murray into that name, with two stores later in Ogden and Salt Lake City. In 1991, Weinstock's operations were later assumed by its other sister chain The Emporium. The history of Sacramento, California, began with its founding by Samuel Brannan and John Augustus Sutter, Jr. in 1848 around an embarcadero that his father, John Sutter, Sr. constructed at the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers a few years prior. Sacramento was named after the Sacramento River, which forms its western border. The river was named by Spanish cavalry officer Gabriel Moraga for the Santisimo Sacramento (Most Holy Sacrament), referring to the Catholic Eucharist.
