''Guitar Sounds from Lenny Breau'' is an album by Canadian jazz guitarist Lenny Breau that was released in 1968. History Breau befriended Chet Atkins, which resulted in Breau's first two albums for RCA Records, RCA. Atkins and Breau also collaborated on ''Standard Brands (Atkins/Breau album), Standard Brands'' in 1981. Breau spent much time around Atkins's office in Nashville during and after these two RCA albums. They played clubs regularly.McClelland, John & Bratic, Deyan. Leonard Harold Breau (August 5, 1941 – August 12, 1984) was an American-Canadian guitarist. He blended many styles of music, including jazz, country, classical, and flamenco. Inspired by country guitarists like Chet Atkins, Breau used fingerstyle techniques not often used in jazz guitar. By using a seven-string guitar and approaching the guitar like a piano, he opened up possibilities for the instrument. Biography Early life Breau was born August 5, 1941, in Auburn, Maine, USA and moved with his family to Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada in 1948. His parents, Harold Breau and Betty Cody, were professional country musicians who performed and recorded from the mid-1930s until the mid-1970s. "Music to Watch Girls By" was the first Top 40 hit by Bob Crewe using his own name, recorded by his group The Bob Crewe Generation. The music was composed by Sidney "Sid" Ramin. Background Crewe first heard the song performed in a jingle demo for a Diet Pepsi commercial, and according to Greg Adams, writing for ''All Music Guide'', the song "exemplified the groovy state of instrumental music at that time." In Bob Crewe's version, a trumpet plays the whole verse, the first time around, sounding like Herb Alpert's Tijuana brass style. The second time the verse is played, a half step up in tone from G minor to A-flat minor, a tenor saxophone plays a jazzier version, accompanied by strings, surf-style guitar (reminiscent of 1960s spy films) and a harpsichord, that play a counter-melody. Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten ( Nevills; January 5, 1893 – June 29, 1987) was an influential American folk and blues musician. She was a self-taught left-handed guitarist who played a guitar strung for a right-handed player, but played it upside down. This position meant that she would play the bass lines with her fingers and the melody with her thumb. Her signature alternating bass style has become known as "Cotten picking". "Freight Train" is an American folk song written by Elizabeth Cotten in the early 20th century, and popularized during the American folk revival and British skiffle period of the 1950s and 1960s. By Cotten's own account in the 1985 BBC series ''Down Home'', she composed "Freight Train" as a teenager (sometime between 1906 and 1912), inspired by the sound of the trains rolling in on the tracks near her home in North Carolina. Lorenz Milton Hart (May 2, 1895 – November 22, 1943) was an American lyricist and half of the Broadway songwriting team Rodgers and Hart. Some of his more famous lyrics include "Blue Moon"; " The Lady Is a Tramp"; "Manhattan"; " Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered"; and " My Funny Valentine". John Edmund Andrew Phillips (August 30, 1935 – March 18, 2001) was an American musician, singer, and songwriter.
