Grimod De La Reynière
Alexandre-Balthazar-Laurent Grimod de La Reynière (20 November r September?1758 in Paris – 25 December 1837) was a lawyer by qualification who acquired fame during the reign of Napoleon for his sensual and public gastronomic lifestyle. Son of Laurent Grimod de La Reynière, he inherited the family fortune on the death of his father, a '' fermier général'', in 1793. He was a member of the Société du Caveau. Biography Though his father built a stylish house in Paris with a garden that looked onto the '' bosquets'' of the Champs-Élysées and kept a great table, the younger Grimod had been born with deformed hands and was kept out of sight, a circumstance that developed his biting wit and dark sense of humour. Pierre Nora
Pierre Charles Nora (; 17 November 1931 – 2 June 2025) was a French historian elected to the Académie Française on 7 June 2001. As editor at Éditions Gallimard, he established the ''Library of Social Sciences'' in 1966 and the ''Library of Histories'' in 1970. He was director of studies at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences from 1977 for four decades. Nora is known for having directed , four volumes focused on places and objects of remembrance which incarnate the national memory of the French, writing a new history (). Alexis Charles Henri Clérel, comte de Tocqueville (29 July 180516 April 1859), was a French Aristocracy (class), aristocrat, diplomat, political philosopher, and historian. He is best known for his works ''Democracy in America'' (appearing in two volumes, 1835 and 1840) and ''The Old Regime and the Revolution'' (1856). Claude Henri de Rouvroy, Comte de Saint-Simon (; ; 17 October 1760 – 19 May 1825), better known as Henri de Saint-Simon (), was a French political, economic and socialist theorist and businessman whose thought had a substantial influence on politics, economics, sociology and the philosophy of science. Pascal Ory
Pascal Ory (; born 31 July 1948) is a French historian. A student of René Rémond, he specialises in cultural and political history and has written on Fascism ever since his master's dissertation on the Greenshirts of Henri Dorgères. In the 1970s, he contributed to a better definition of cultural history. Ory is a professor at the Université de Paris-I-Panthéon-Sorbonne. He is president of the Association pour le développement de l'histoire culturelle (ADHC) and regent of the Collège de 'Pataphysique. Involved in politics, he was a municipal councillor, formerly an ally to the mayor Georges Lemoine, and head of the socialist list in the municipal elections of March 2001, in the city of Chartres. Affair Of The Poisons
The Affair of the Poisons (, ) was a major murder scandal in France during the reign of King Louis XIV. Between 1677 and 1682, a number of prominent members of the aristocracy were implicated and sentenced on charges of poisoning and witchcraft. The scandal reached into the inner circle of the king. It led to the execution of 36 people. Context and origin In 1672, upon the natural death of cavalry officer Godin de Sainte-Croix, an inventory of his papers revealed a box containing nine letters from his mistress, the Marquise de Brinvilliers, as well as the marquise's acknowledgment of a debt amounting to 30,000 livres. Madame De Brinvilliers
Marie-Madeleine d'Aubray, Marquise de Brinvilliers (; 22 July 1630 – 16 July 1676) was a French people, French French aristocracy, aristocrat who was accused and convicted of murdering her father and two of her brothers in order to inherit their estates. After her death, there was speculation that she tested her poisons on upwards of 30 sick people in hospitals, but these rumours were never confirmed. Her alleged crimes were discovered after the death of her lover and co-conspirator, Captain Godin de Sainte-Croix, who saved letters detailing dealings of poisonings between the two. Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve (; 23 December 1804 – 13 October 1869) was a French literary critic. Early life He was born in Boulogne, educated there, and studied medicine at the Collège Charlemagne in Paris (1824–27). In 1828, he served in the St Louis Hospital. Beginning in 1824, he contributed literary articles, the ''Premier lundis'' of his collected ''Works'', to the newspaper ''Globe'', and in 1827 he came, by a review of Victor Hugo's ''Odes et Ballades'', into close association with Hugo and the Cénacle, the literary circle that strove to define the ideas of the rising Romanticism and struggle against classical formalism. Jean-Louis Flandrin (July 4, 1931 – August 8, 2001) was a French historian. His fields of study were family, sexuality, and, in particular, food. He introduced new analytical methods and examined a range of sources including church penitentials, cookbooks, and even traditional proverbs over a wide historical time-frame, from the High Middle Ages to the 20th century.
