Grimmen Formation
The Grimmen Formation is a Lower Jurassic (Toarcian) geological formation in northeastern Germany, primarily exposed in the Grimmen and Klein Lehmhagen clay pits and documented in wells such as Reinberg 1E. Formally established in 2025, it was previously part of the informal “Green Series” of the Ciechocinek Formation. It represents a prodelta to brackish-Marine biology, marine depositional system in the eastern North German basin, North German Basin (NGB), shaped by Sea level change, sea-level changes and the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, Toarcian anoxic event. History Studies of Toarcian strata near Grimmen began in 1874 with the discovery of fossiliferous clays in a railway cutting near Schönenwalde, 5 km north of Grimmen, initially misidentified as Middle Jurassic due to ammonite finds. Ciechocinek Formation
The Ciechocinek Formation (also known as the Gryfice Formation at Suliszewo, Choszczno County, Suliszewo) is a Jurassic (lower Toarcian) geological formation extending across the Baltic coast, primarily in Poland, with minor occurrences in Lithuania and Kaliningrad Oblast, Kaliningrad. It represents one of the largest deltaic systems in the fossil record, covering approximately 7.1 × 100,000 km² in the Polish realm. Deposited in a brackish-marine embayment within the eastern arm of the Mid-European Toarcian Basin, it is a sister unit to the Grimmen Formation, the Sorthat Formation (Bornholm) and Lava Formation (Lithuania), with interfingering relationships with the Posidonia Shale in western regions. Posidonia Shale Formation
The Posidonia Shale (, also called Schistes Bitumineux in Luxembourg) geologically known as the Sachrang Formation, is an Early Jurassic (Early to Late Toarcian) geological formation in Germany, northern Switzerland, northwestern Austria, southern Luxembourg and the Netherlands, including exceptionally well-preserved complete skeletons of fossil marine fish and reptiles. Pliensbachian
The Pliensbachian is an age of the geologic timescale and stage in the stratigraphic column. It is part of the Early or Lower Jurassic Epoch or Series and spans the time between 192.9 ±0.3 Ma and 184.2 ±0.3 Ma (million years ago). The Lias Group or Lias is a lithostratigraphic unit (a sequence of rock strata) found in a large area of western Europe, including the British Isles, the North Sea, the Low Countries and the north of Germany. It consists of marine limestones, shales, marls and clays. ''Lias'' is a Middle English term for hard limestone, used in this specific sense by geologists since 1833. Sea Level Change
The sea level has been rising from the end of the last ice age, which was around 20,000 years ago. Between 1901 and 2018, the average sea level rose by , with an increase of per year since the 1970s.
