Green Ban
A green ban is a form of strike action, usually taken by a trade union or other organised labour group, which is conducted for environmentalist or conservationist purposes. They mainly took place in Australia during the 1970s, led by the Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) and used to protect parkland, low-income housing and buildings with historical significance. At times, industrial action was used in relation to other issues, such as when a ' pink ban' was placed on Macquarie University due to the expulsion of Jeremy Fisher, a gay man, from student housing. Strike action, also called labor strike, labour strike in British English, or simply strike, is a work stoppage caused by the mass refusal of employees to Working class, work. A strike usually takes place in response to employee grievances. Strikes became common during the Industrial Revolution, when Labour economics, mass labor became important in factories and mines. Strikebreaker
A strikebreaker (sometimes pejoratively called a scab, blackleg, bootlicker, blackguard or knobstick) is a person who works despite an ongoing strike. Juanita Nielsen
Juanita Joan Nielsen (; 22 April 1937 – disappeared 4 July 1975) was an Australian newspaper publisher, urban conservationist, and heiress. She disappeared after attending a meeting at the Carousel nightclub (also called Les Girls) in Kings Cross in Sydney on 4 July 1975. Her body has never been found. Nielsen opposed urban development on Victoria Street, Kings Cross, Sydney, initiated by property developer Frank Theeman. She also opposed his development of the nearby suburb of Woolloomooloo. It is generally believed that she was killed because of her conservationism, and there have been strong suspicions of involvement of organised crime and corrupt police. The New South Wales Police Force is a law enforcement agency of the state of New South Wales, Australia, established in 1862. Norm Gallagher
Norman Leslie Gallagher (20 September 1931 – 26 August 1999) was a controversial Australian trade unionist, and Maoist who led the militant Builders Labourers Federation as federal Secretary and as Victorian State Secretary. Early life and career Gallagher was raised in Melbourne and joined the Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) in 1951. By 1970, he was elected as the BLF's Victorian State Secretary and radically improved pay and conditions on building sites. His militant leadership style initially united union factions but later alienated other union leaders and the Victorian Labor Government.
