Greatest Hits Radio Manchester & The North West is an Independent Local Radio station based in Manchester, England, owned and operated by Bauer as part of the Greatest Hits Radio Network. It broadcasts to Greater Manchester and North West England. As of September 2024, the station broadcasts to a weekly audience of 341,000 listeners, according to RAJAR. History Early years The station began broadcasting at 5am on Tuesday 2 April 1974 as Piccadilly Radio on 261 m (1151 kHz then) AM/MW and on 97.0 MHz FM (from the same transmitter in Saddleworth that is now used by Hits Radio Manchester). The medium wave frequency moved to 1152 kHz on 23 November 1978 with the implementation of the Geneva 1975 plan. The station was named after Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester, and Piccadilly Plaza was home to the station's first studios until 1996, when it relocated to the Castlefield area of Manchester. Mark Radcliffe (radio Broadcaster)
Mark Radcliffe (born 29 June 1958) is an English radio broadcaster, musician and writer. He is best known for his broadcasting work for the BBC, for which he has worked in various roles since the 1980s. Radcliffe began his broadcasting career in local commercial radio in Manchester before a move to the national station BBC Radio 5 (former), BBC Radio 5, where he met and formed a partnership with Marc Riley, a former guitarist with The Fall (band), the Fall. Peter Mitchell (11 December 1958 – 12 March 2020) was a British radio DJ and presenter. He was born in Crumpsall, Manchester. Mitchell was a radio presenter for Manchester's Piccadilly Radio, Key 103, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6 Music, Radio X and Absolute Radio, and was one half of duo Pete and Geoff on Virgin Radio (which later became Absolute Radio). Timmy Mallett (born 18 October 1955) is an English television presenter, broadcaster, author and artist. He is known for his striking visual style, colourful glasses and shirts, and a giant pink foam mallet (known as "Mallett's Mallet"), as well as his "utterly brilliant!" and "blaaah!" catchphrases. Timothy Grundy (4 July 1958 – 1 February 2009) was an English television and radio presenter. He was born in Manchester, Lancashire. Biography Grundy was born to a Scottish mother and Bill Grundy, the broadcaster remembered for his expletive-filled interview with the Sex Pistols. Robert Andrew Peebles (13 December 1948 – 22 March 2025) was an English radio DJ, television presenter and cricket commentator. Life and career Born in Hampstead, London, Peebles attended Bishop's Stortford College. He began as a nightclub DJ in the late 1960s. Steve Penk
Steve Penk is a British radio and television presenter. He was born in Rusholme in Manchester and attended Hazel Grove High School. At the age of 16, he started his radio career at Greatest Hits Radio Greater Manchester, Piccadilly Radio in 1978 (subsequently rebranded Key 103), where his breakfast show delivered record ratings, the highest in the station's history to this day. In 1997, Penk moved on to work at Capital London, Capital Radio London, presenting the mid-morning show. On his programme he regularly did his famous radio wind-ups.
