Greatest Hits Radio Liverpool & The North West is an Independent Local Radio station based in Liverpool, England, owned and operated by Bauer Media Audio UK as part of the Greatest Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to Merseyside, Cheshire and South West Lancashire. The station forms part of Greatest Hits Radio North West. As of December 2024, the station has a weekly audience of 331,000 listeners according to RAJAR. Early history Originally it was known as " 1548 City Talk", this service existed between 1989 and 1991 originally between 0700 and 1900 on weekdays. It was not a success, and a "Gold" format of music was introduced as the station initially became "Radio City Gold", and then "City Gold". Radio City was purchased by EMAP in 1998, and City Gold was rebranded Magic 1548 as part of the network of Magic stations on AM. Bauer Media Audio UK is a UK-based radio division of Bauer Media Group owning brands; Absolute Radio, Greatest Hits Radio, Jazz FM, Hits Radio, KISS, Planet Rock, Magic, Kerrang! Greatest Hits Radio Liverpool & The North West (Warrington) (formerly Wire FM) is an Independent Local Radio station serving the Warrington, Widnes and Runcorn areas of Cheshire. Following its sale to Bauer Radio, the station was closed and merged with the Greatest Hits Radio network in September 2020. History Wire FM's origins began in 1990 when two presenters at Warrington's hospital radio station, Stephen Cooper and Philip Houltby, decided to run an RSL station for the town. Cooper had previous RSL experience via Waves AM in Peterhead. The station was duly organised and went on air as Warrington Festival of Music Radio (WFMR) for two weeks in May 1991. St Johns Beacon
St Johns Beacon (also known as the Radio City Tower) is a Grade II listed communications and observation tower in Liverpool, England. Designed by James A. Roberts Associates, it was built in 1969 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II. The tower is tall, and is the second-tallest free-standing structure in Liverpool. It has a long antenna on the roof, making it the tallest structure in Liverpool when antennas are included. As testament to the importance of its design, which was described by Historic England as "embodying the technological bravura and spirit of the space age", the building was listed at Grade II in November 2020. Greatest Hits Radio North East is an Independent Local Radio station, based in Newcastle, England, owned and operated by Bauer as part of the Greatest Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to North East England. History Great North Radio (also known as G.N.R) was formed in March 1989 using the AM frequencies of Metro Radio and Radio Tees. This happened after the Metro Radio Group decided to split the FM and AM frequencies up. GNR's output consisted of mellow music from the 1950s through to the 1980s, including current hits that fitted the format.
