Great Yarmouth
Great Yarmouth ( ), often called Yarmouth, is a seaside resort, seaside town which gives its name to the wider Borough of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England; it straddles the River Yare and is located east of Norwich. Its fishing industry, mainly for herring, shrank after the mid-20th century and has all but ended. North Sea oil from the 1960s supplied an oil rig industry that services offshore natural gas rigs; more recently, offshore wind power and other renewable energy industries have ensued. Yarmouth has been a resort since 1760 and a gateway from the Norfolk Broads to the North Sea. Holidaymaking rose when a railway opened in 1844, bringing easier, cheaper access and some new settlement. Wellington Pier opened in 1854 and Britannia Pier in 1858. Great Yarmouth Minster
The Minster Church of St Nicholas is the minster and parish church of the town of Great Yarmouth, in Norfolk, England. It was built during the Norman era and is England's third largest parish church, behind Beverley Minster in East Yorkshire () and Christchurch Priory in Dorset (). Great Yarmouth Town Hall
Great Yarmouth Town Hall is a municipal building in Hall Plain, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. The town hall, which is the meeting place of Great Yarmouth Borough Council, is a Grade II* listed building. History In medieval times the main civic building in the town was the Tolhouse which had been completed in 1150. A dedicated town hall, designed in the Neoclassical architecture, neoclassical style with a full-height tetrastyle portico, was built on the quayside and completed in 1716. The principal room inside was the dining room which contained a portrait by James Worsdale of George II of Great Britain, King George II and a wooden scale model of the Britannia Monument. A village lock-up, lock-up for petty criminals was erected at the back of the town hall in 1842. Great Yarmouth Hippodrome
The Great Yarmouth Hippodrome is a circus building in Great Yarmouth, England that was built in 1903. Peter Jay bought the building in 1979, and the Jay family continue to produce Circus Spectaculars four times a year, with Jack Jay as ringmaster and producer and Ben Jay as manager. History The Hippodrome Circus in Great Yarmouth was built by the showman George Gilbert in 1903 and designed by architect Ralph Scott Cockrill. It is one of only two purpose-built permanent circuses in England still in operation, and one of only three in the world with a circus floor that sinks into a pool. It is a concrete construction with brick and terracotta facing. Its facade consists of three bays with two towers including Art Nouveau relief foliage patterns in the arched side panels. Wellington Pier
Wellington Pier is located in Great Yarmouth in the county of Norfolk, England.OS Explorer Map OL40, 2005, The Broads, History The pier was opened on 31 October 1853 and the wooden structure cost £6,776 to build. The pier was designed by P. Ashcroft. In its first year of opening the pier was a huge success and made an impressive profit for the time of £581. Five years later a second pier was built close to the Wellington which had a very large financial effect on the profitability of the pier. By 1899 Great Yarmouth Corporation bailed out the failing business for the sum of £1,250 and had plans to improve the entertainment and amusement of the pier. Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach
The Pleasure Beach Great Yarmouth is an amusement park located in the seaside resort town of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, on the English east coast. It opened in 1909. The largest and most popular ride at the park is the wooden Roller Coaster which opened in 1932. Great Yarmouth Winter Gardens is a grade II* listed building in Great Yarmouth, England. It was built of glass and iron in Torquay over 3 years starting 1878. It was moved to Great Yarmouth in 1904 by barge and rebuilt. It reopened in 1906. Time and Tide: The Museum of Great Yarmouth Life, located in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, UK, is a maritime and fishing museum in Great Yarmouth and established in 2005. It is situated in a former Victorian herring curing factory known as Tower Curing Works, and is now part of Maritime Heritage East, a partnership of over 30 maritime museums in the East of England. History The curing works was closed down in the mid-1980s, and the building lay unused for almost 20 years. Over £4.5 million was spent on refurbishing and converting the Grade II listed factory into the modern museum about the building's life as a fish factory, which opened in 2005. Norfolk ( ) is a ceremonial county in England, located in East Anglia and officially part of the East of England region.
