Grand Slam (golf)
In golf, winning all of the sport's Major championships (golf), major championships in the same calendar year constitutes the Grand Slam. The modern (professional) Grand Slam would mean winning The Open Championship, U.S. Open (golf), U.S. Open, PGA Championship and Masters Tournament in the same year. Before the rise of professional tournament golf, the Grand Slam was achieved in 1930 when Bobby Jones (golfer), Bobby Jones won the four major championships of that era: The Amateur Championship, The Open Championship, the United States Open, and the U.S. Amateur, United States Amateur. Variations include a Career Grand Slam, which involves winning all of the major tournaments within a player's career. A links is the oldest style of golf course, first developed in Scotland. Links courses are generally built on sandy coastland that offers a firmer playing surface than parkland and heathland courses. The word "links" comes via the Scots language from the Old English word '' hlinc'': "rising ground, ridge" and refers to an area of coastal sand dunes and sometimes to open parkland; it is cognate with ''lynchet''. The United States Golf Association (USGA) is the United States national association of golf courses, clubs and facilities and the governing body of golf for the U.S. and Mexico.
