Gouverneur Kemble
Gouverneur Kemble (January 25, 1786 – September 18, 1875) was an American diplomat, industrialist, and two-term United States Congressman from New York from 1837 to 1841. He helped found the West Point Foundry, a major producer of artillery during the American Civil War. Early life and education Kemble was born in 1786 to a prominent family in New York City, the eldest son of prosperous attorney and merchant Peter Kemble of New Jersey. Ships of the firm Gouverneur & Kemble conducted trade in the West Indies, Europe and China. Kemble was educated in New York and graduated from Columbia College in 1803, then entered the mercantile business. He was friends with Washington Irving and other members of city society, who enjoyed socializing at Cockloft Hall (an old family mansion on the Passaic River at Woodside, Newark which Kemble inherited and was sometimes known as "Salmagundi" or the "Bachelor's Elysium"). Gouverneur Morris ( ; January 31, 1752 – November 6, 1816) was an American statesman, a Founding Father of the United States, and a signatory to the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. He wrote the Preamble to the United States Constitution and has been called the "Penman of the Constitution". While most Americans still thought of themselves as citizens of their respective states, Morris advanced the idea of being a citizen of a single union of states. He was also one of the most outspoken opponents of slavery among those who were present at the Constitutional Congress. He represented New York in the United States Senate from 1800 to 1803. Morris was born into a wealthy landowning family in what is now New York City. After attending King's College (now Columbia University) he studied law under Judge William Smith and earned admission to the bar. Gouverneur Morris IV (1876–1953) was an American author of pulp novels and short stories during the early 20th century. Biography Gouverneur Morris IV was born in 1876 and was a great-grandson of American Founding Fathers of the United States, Founding Father Gouverneur Morris. He graduated from Yale University, where he wrote for campus humor magazine ''The Yale Record''. He was a prolific novelist and short story writer, with multiple of his works adapted into films. He worked as a war correspondent during World War I. After relocating from New York to California in 1919. In 1905, he married Elizabeth "Elsie" Waterbury. They separated in 1919 and divorced in 1923. He married screenwriter and racecar driver Ruth Wightman that same year in Mexico, with a second ceremony in California the following year in 1924. Gouverneur Island is a low rocky island west-southwest of Petrel Island and east of Cape Géodésie in the southern part of the Géologie Archipelago, Antarctica. The village is named after Gouverneur Morris, one of the authors of the Constitution of the United States, as well as a prominent landowner and part-time resident of the area.
