Gord's Gold, Vol. 2
''Gord's Gold Volume II'' is a compilation album released by Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot in 1988. Like the first ''Gord's Gold'' collection, ''Volume II'' features re-recordings of earlier hits alongside the contemporary material. On ''Gord's Gold'' only the early songs that didn't match Lightfoot's 1970s sound (and whose original masters were owned by Lightfoot's former label, United Artists) were re-recorded. However, on ''Volume II'' all tracks, apart from "Make Way (For the Lady)," "Ghosts of Cape Horn," Baby Step Back," and "It's Worth Believin'" were re-recorded. The album also contains the first appearance of "If It Should Please You," a previously unrecorded song that the band often performed in concert. Some tracks on ''Volume II'' that had been released during the 1980s sound almost identical to their original recording. Additionally, the re-recorded tracks were recorded live in the studio. Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr. (born November 17, 1938) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist who achieved international success in folk, folk-rock, and country music. He is credited with helping to define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s. He has been referred to as Canada's greatest songwriter and is known internationally as a folk-rock legend. Lightfoot's biographer Nicholas Jennings said "His name is synonymous with timeless songs about trains and shipwrecks, rivers and highways, lovers and loneliness." ''Sundown'' is Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot's ninth studio album, released in 1974 on the Reprise Records label. It was the only Lightfoot album to reach No. 1 on the pop chart in the US. In his native Canada, it topped the ''RPM 100'' for five consecutive weeks, first hitting No. 1 on June 22, 1974, the same day it reached the top of the chart south of the border. The album marked the pinnacle of Lightfoot's acoustic folk-country blend before he embarked on an increasing use of electric instruments, although he did include some electric guitar, notably on the title track. Michael Omartian (born November 26, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter, arranger, keyboardist, and music producer. He produced number-one records in three consecutive decades. He has earned 11 Grammy Awards nominations and won three. He spent five years on the A&R staff of ABC/Dunhill Records as a producer, artist, and arranger; then was hired by Warner Bros. Records as an in-house producer and A&R staff member. Omartian moved from Los Angeles to Nashville in 1993, where he served on the Board of Governors of the Recording Academy, and has helped to shape the curriculum for the first master's degree program in the field of Music Business at Belmont University. Dean Parks
Weldon Dean Parks (born December 6, 1946) is an American session guitarist and record producer from Fort Worth, Texas. Albums Parks was member of the North Texas State One O'clock Lab Band before moving to Los Angeles to work with Sonny and Cher in 1970. In 1980, he was a founding member of the Christian Jazz Fusion band Koinonia. Parks is best known for his many contributions to albums by Steely Dan, Michael Jackson, and Bread. Notably, he played guitar on Steely Dan's ''Royal Scam'' track, "Haitian Divorce". Parks is also a long time collaborator on David Foster albums, such as '' Shadows'' by Gordon Lightfoot. Parks features on Cat Beach's albums ''Letting Go'' and ''Love Me Out Loud''. ''Old Dan's Records'' is Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot's eighth studio album, released in 1972 on the Reprise Records label. The album reached #1 in Canada on the ''RPM'' national album chart on November 5, 1972, and remained there for three weeks. In the U.S., it peaked at #95 on the pop chart. The album marks a continued evolution in Lightfoot's sound as he begins to add country influences to his standard folk sound with the help of the banjo, dobro and steel guitar. Lightfoot would continue to use these country influences in his music until the early 1980s. Despite its 1972 year of initial release, the album was nominated for and won the 1974 Juno Award for "Folk Album of the Year". ''Dream Street Rose'' is Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot's 14th original album released in 1980 on the Warner Brothers Records label (#3426). The album peaked at #58 on the country chart and at #60 on the pop chart. The album continues in the style of ''Summertime Dream'' (1976) and '' Endless Wire'' (1978), with a mix of faster-paced, country-style songs, and introspective folk ballads. Lightfoot's penchant for seafaring songs was again evident with three songs featuring an ocean theme. The album also featured a recorded version of "The Auctioneer" which had been a concert staple for Lightfoot, although it seemed somewhat out of place when compared to the rest of the album's material. It was also the last album that would see Lightfoot collaborate with long-time producer Lenny Waronker. It was one of the first albums recorded digitally. ''Shadows'' is Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot's fifteenth original album, released in 1982 on the Warner Brothers Records label. It peaked at #87 on the Billboard charts. The album marked another significant turning point in Lightfoot's musical evolution. He moves further away from his acoustic roots through greater use of synthesizers and electric organ. The album is softer in composition than its immediate predecessors with a return to slower, more introspective ballads as compared to the faster, country style of Lightfoot's mid-1970s albums. Although a commercial failure (Lightfoot referred to it as "the music industry's best-kept secret"), the critical reception of the album was positive. "The Wreck of the ''Edmund Fitzgerald'' is a 1976 hit song written, composed and performed by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot to commemorate the sinking of the bulk carrier SS ''Edmund Fitzgerald'' on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975. Lightfoot drew his inspiration from ''Newsweek'' article on the event, "The Cruelest Month", which it published in its November 24, 1975, issue. Lightfoot considers this song to be his finest work. Appearing originally on Lightfoot's 1976 album ''Summertime Dream'', the single version hit number 1 in his native Canada (in the ''RPM'' national singles survey) on November 20, 1976, barely a year after the disaster.
