Glen Rovers is a Cork (city), Cork-based Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Blackpool, Cork, Ireland. The club was founded in 1916 and is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. They have been historically part of the ''Big Three'' of Cork hurling along with Cork city, city rivals Blackrock GAA, Blackrock and St. Finbarr's GAA, St Finbarr's. History Hurling had been played in the Blackpool area for some time before the Glen Rovers club was established. Areas like the Commons Road and Thomas Davis Street in particular had fielded teams from time to time. Sarsfields GAA (Cork)
Sarsfields GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Glanmire, County Cork, Ireland. The club, a sister club of Glanmire, is solely concerned with the game of hurling. History Sarsfields GAA Club was established by a group of men, led by Billy O'Neill, in 1894. Named in honour of the Irish Jacobite and soldier Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan, the club was first formally registered in 1896. Sarsfields claimed their first county honours in 1937, when the Cork JHC was secured, however, there were also Cork SHC final defeats in 1909, 1936, 1940 and 1947. Sarsfields made the SHC breakthrough in 1951 following a 5–08 to 3–07 defeat of Glen Rovers in the final. The club added a second SHC title after a defeat of University College Cork in 1957. Charlie McCarthy (hurler)
Charles McCarthy (born 1946) is an Irish former Hurling, hurler who played as a left corner-forward at senior level for the Cork county hurling team, Cork county team. Born in Cork (city), Tower Street, Cork, McCarthy first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Sullivan's Quay CBS. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Cork minor teams as a dual player, before later joining the under-21 hurling side. He made his senior debut during the 1965 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, 1965 championship. McCarthy immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen and won five All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland medals, nine Munster Senior Hurling Championship, Munster medals and four National Hurling League medals. Joe Salmon
Peter Joseph Salmon (1 April 1930 – 23 July 1991) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling at various times with his local club, Meelick-Eyrecourt,before switching, for a short period, to Liam Mellows in Galway and Glen Rovers in Cork because of migration. Salmon also played with the Galway senior inter-county team from 1949 until 1964. Playing career Club Salmon played his club hurling with his local club Meelick-Eyrecourt. He also played with the Glen Rovers club in Cork. In all, Salmon collected five county championship medals. UCC is a football and hurling club associated with University College Cork. Imokilly GAA is a Gaelic football and Hurling division in the east of Cork, Ireland. The division includes towns such as Midleton, Cobh, and Youghal. It is one of eight divisions of Cork County Board. It organizes competitions for the clubs within the division, from Under 12 up to the adult level. The winners of these competitions compete against other divisional champions to determine which club is the county champion. Carrigdhoun GAA is one of the eight baronies or Gaelic Athletic Association divisions that make up Cork. The division is made up of eleven Gaelic Athletic Association teams, making it one of the smaller divisions. The division is also known as the South East division. It extends from just south of Cork city down to Ballinspittle in the south of the county. Christy Ring
Nicholas Christy Michael Ring (30 October 1920 – 2 March 1979) was an Irish hurler whose league and championship career at senior level with the Cork county team spanned twenty-four years from 1939 to 1963. He established many championship records, including career appearances (65), scoring tally (33–208) and number of All-Ireland medals won (8); however, these records were subsequently bested by a number of players. Ring is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game, with many former players, commentators and fans rating him as the number one player of all time. Ballincollig GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club based in the town of Ballincollig, County Cork, Ireland. The club is affiliated with the Cork GAA board and it fields Gaelic football and hurling teams in Muskerry divisional competitions. As of 2010, the club was participating in the Cork Senior Football Championship and the Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship. Paddy "Fox" Collins (12 April 1903 – 17 February 1995) was an Irish hurling, hurler who played as a left corner-back for the Cork GAA, Cork senior team. Born in Kinsale, County Cork, Collins first played competitive hurling during his schooling at The North Monastery. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-five when he first linked up with the Cork senior team. Charlie Tobin
Charles (Charlie) Tobin (15 September 1911 – 11 June 1993) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Glen Rovers and was a member of both the Cork and Dublin senior inter-county teams in the 1930s and 1940s. Playing career Tobin joined the Glen Rovers senior team in 1937 and won the first of five successive county senior championship titles that year. Renowned as a high goal-scoring forward, he claimed a further two winners' medals in 1944 and 1945. He still today (2024) has the highest scoring record of six goals and one point in the 1940 Cork County hurling final. Having never played at inter-county underage or junior levels, Tobin was drafted onto the Cork senior team during the 1940 Munster Championship.
