Glasgow Provan (Scottish Parliament Constituency)
Glasgow Provan ( Gaelic: ''Glaschu Provan'') is a constituency of the Scottish Parliament ( Holyrood), being one of eight constituencies within the Glasgow City council area. It elects one Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by the plurality (first past the post) method of election. It is also one of nine constituencies in the Glasgow electoral region, which elects seven additional members, in addition to the nine constituency MSPs, to produce a form of proportional representation for the region as a whole. The constituency was created in 2011, comprising much of the old Glasgow Baillieston seat which was abolished for the 2011 Scottish Parliament election. The seat has been held by Ivan McKee of the Scottish National Party since the 2016 Scottish Parliament election. Proportional Representation
Proportional representation (PR) refers to any electoral system under which subgroups of an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. The concept applies mainly to political divisions (Political party, political parties) among voters. The aim of such systems is that all votes cast contribute to the result so that each representative in an assembly is mandated by a roughly equal number of voters, and therefore all votes have equal weight. Under other election systems, a bare Plurality (voting), plurality or a scant majority in a district are all that are used to elect a member or group of members. PR systems provide balanced representation to different factions, usually defined by parties, reflecting how votes were cast. East Centre (ward)
East Centre (Ward 18) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, but four members were still returned. Boundaries Located in the east of Glasgow, the core of the ward since 2007 includes Carntyne, Cranhill and Riddrie, with the northern boundary being the M8 motorway). The 2017 changes were substantial: the Dennistoun, Milnbank and Haghill neighbourhoods in the west of the original territory were removed and assigned to a new Dennistoun ward, whereas the neighbourhoods of Barlanark, Budhill, Greenfield, Lightburn and Springboig were added to East Centre from the Baillieston ward. The City of Glasgow is divided into a number of Ward (electoral subdivision), wards. These electoral districts, as they are also known, are used to elect councillors to Glasgow City Council.
