Glasgow District (rugby Union)
Glasgow District is a Scottish amateur rugby union team which plays in the amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship. The side evolved into the professional provincial side Glasgow Warriors when the Scottish Rugby Union embraced professionalism. However the amateur district is still used for the representation of amateur players in the Inter-District Championship; and this amateur championship guides the selection of Scotland Club XV international players. Founded in 1872 Glasgow District was a select provincial amateur rugby union team that drew its players mainly from the Greater Glasgow area, as well as others from the rest of the west of Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Strathclyde regional council area. Historically the Glasgow District team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. George Buchanan McClure was a Scottish rugby football playerBath, p137 and along with his brother James Howe McClure, has the distinction of being the first twin to be capped in international rugby. Early life George Buchanan McClure, also known as Joe, was born on 8 July 1851 in the Barony district of Glasgow, the son of James Howe McClure and Grace (née Buchanan). He was one of two brothers; James Howe McClure is thought to have been the first to be born. They were James and Grace's fifth and sixth children. James Stewart Carrick
James Stewart Carrick (4 September 1855 – 2 January 1923) was a Scottish rugby union and cricket player. He died in Seattle, Washington in 1923. Carrick was a genuine all-round sportsman, playing international rugby as a full-back for , and appeared in a few important cricket matches. The British Newspaper Archive website provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library's Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. Hamilton Crescent
Hamilton Crescent is a cricket ground in the Partick area of Glasgow, Scotland, which is the home of the West of Scotland Cricket Club. It was previously also used for association football and hosted the first international football match in 1872, between Scotland and England. Cricket Cricket has been played at Hamilton Crescent since at least 1862, when it hosted a Gentlemen v Players fixture. Beginning in the 1870s it regularly hosted touring Marylebone Cricket Club teams as well as tour matches against visiting international sides such as Australia, South Africa, New Zealand.
