Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon, known as Gilkes, is an English hydropower engineering company based in Kendal, Cumbria, founded in 1853. The company makes hydropower turbines and engine cooling pumps. One of the company's notable products is the Turgo turbine, invented in 1919 by Eric Crewdson whose grandson Charles Crewdson Order of the British Empire, OBE is, the company chairman. History In 1853 two brothers named Williamson established a company at Canal Head, Kendal. The first turbine they built in 1856 was installed at Holmescales Farm at Old Hutton and powered farm machinery there for more than a century. Alexander Gilkes
Alexander Mark Heming Gilkes (born July 1979) is a British businessman. He is the co-founder of venture studio Squared Circles, which launched in 2020. He was previously the co-founder and president of online auction house Paddle8 from 2011 to 2018, when it was sold to The Native. Early life Gilkes is the son of Jeremy Gilkes, a dermatologist, and was born and raised in London. He was educated at Eton College and at the University of Bristol. Career Gilkes has been based in New York since 2008. He served as an auctioneer at Phillips de Pury & Company and worked at LVMH. Gilkes presided as an auctioneer for auctions including Madonna's Raising Malawi, Elton John AIDS Foundation, and amFAR. Arthur Herman Gilkes
Arthur Herman Gilkes MA, (1849 – 13 September 1922) was a noted educationalist, author, and clergyman, and was Master of Dulwich College from 1885 to 1914. His final years were spent as Vicar of St Mary Magdalen's Church, Oxford. Early life Gilkes was born in Leominster, a son of William Gilkes, a chemist. He was educated at Shrewsbury School and went on to Christ Church, Oxford, from where he received a First Class Honours degree in Literae Humaniores in 1872, having achieved a first class in Mods in 1870. He was promoted to MA in 1885. On 19 May 1892 Gilkes married Millicent Mary Clarke, a daughter of Bennett Michell Clarke, and the sister of three brothers who attended Dulwich College. They had four sons, all of whom went to Dulwich College,Ormiston, T. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes (born 1947) is an American sociologist, womanist scholar, college professor, and ordained Baptist minister. Biography Cheryl Townsend was born on November 2, 1947, in Boston, Massachusetts. She is the daughter of Murray Luke Townsend Jr. and Evelyn Townsend (née Reid). In 1968, she married Carlton I. Gikes. They were married for three years and divorced in 1971. Gilkes earned three degrees in sociology from Northeastern University, in Boston. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1970, a Master of Arts in 1973, and then earned her Ph.D. in 1979. From 1978 to 1987, she taught sociology at Boston University as an assistant professor. From 1981 to 1982, she was a research assistant at the Women's Studies in Religion Program at Harvard University. James Gilkes
James Wren Gilkes (born 21 September 1952) is a former sprinter from Guyana who specialised in the 200 metres. He competed at two Olympic Games. Career He was the 1975 Pan American 200 metre champion, and in 1979 he took the silver medal in the same event. He was runner up to Don Quarrie of Jamaica in the 1978 AAA's 200 metres event. At the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton he finished fourth in the 100 metre final, then took the silver medal in the 200 metres, finishing behind Allan Wells of Scotland. In 1978, Gilkes was denied a world record for the 4x200 m relay; while the Tobias Striders team he was a member of broke the old world record with a time of 1:20.23, but this was rejected as a record because the team members were from different countries. Marshall Gilkes (born September 30, 1978) is an American jazz trombonist and composer. Biography Marshall Gilkes was born in Camp Springs, Maryland to a musical family; his mother was a classical vocalist and pianist and his father was a Euphonium player in the US Air Force Band in Washington DC and, later, conductor of several Air Force bands including the premier US Air Force Academy Band in Colorado Springs, CO. Due to his father's military profession, he had an itinerant upbringing in Washington, D.C., New Hampshire, New Jersey, Alabama, Illinois, and Colorado. He received his early musical training at the Interlochen Arts Academy, University of Northern Colorado, and William Paterson University. The Ebe Gilkes Quartet was a Guyanese band that became very popular on Barbados in the 1950s, led by Trinidadian jazz pianist Edwin "Ebe" Gilkes. Additionally, travel between British Commonwealth countries encouraged movement between countries of the Caribbean, so clubs and hotels in Barbados were bringing in acts from neighboring countries such as Guyana. Gilkes was a part of the Billy Green Quartet that played in the Coconut Creek Nightclub in Barbados, and by the end of the decade he was the only one to remain in Barbados. Gilkes Wilson and Company was a British locomotive manufacturer at Teesside Engine Works in Middlesbrough which opened in 1843. Initially repairing locomotives, the company built its first engines in 1847. History Gilkes and Wilson was formed as a partnership between Quakers Isaac Wilson (English politician), Isaac Wilson and Edgar Gilkes. Edgar Gilkes was a Middlesbrough councillor, mayor (1863-64) and alderman. He died in Grange-over-Sands in 1894. In 1865 the company merged with Hopkins and Company (establishers of the Tees Side Iron Works, 1857) to become Hopkins Gilkes and Company. The firm undertook design, construction and manufacture of the ironwork for the Deepdale and Belah Viaduct, Belah viaducts (b.1857-1860) on the South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway to a design of Thomas Bouch and Robert Henry Bow.
