Georgia Bulldogs Men's Track And Field
The Georgia Bulldogs men's track and field team represents Georgia Bulldogs, University of Georgia (UGA) in NCAA Division I (NCAA), Division I men's indoor and outdoor track and field. The team's home track is Spec Towns Track, the namesake of Spec Towns. Towns was the first olympic gold medalist from the state of Georgia and a long-time team coach. In 2023, the University of Georgia announced plans to build a new track and field complex. Other UGA men's track and field athletes that have won Olympic medals include Norman Edwards, a 1984 Silver Medalist in the men's 4x100 relay at the 1984 Summer Olympics, Elija Godwin, a bronze medalist as a member of the American Athletics at the 2020 Summer Olympics – Mixed 4 × 400 metres relay, Mixed 4 × 400 metres relay team at the 2020 Summer Olympics and Reese Hoffa, a shot put bronze medalist at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Caryl Smith-Gilbert
Caryl Smith-Gilbert (born April 19, 1969) is the current Director of Men’s and Women’s track and field at the University of Georgia. She was hired in 2021. She coaches both the women's and men's Georgia track teams and is the first female head coach of a Georgia men's team. Early life As a 12-year old, Smith-Gilbert ran the 100 meter dash in 11.78 seconds. She was a silver medalist in the 100 meter dash at the World Junior Championships in 1986. During her high school career, Smith-Gilbert set indoor national records in the 55- and 60-meter dashes and was a two-time Colorado state champion in both the 200-meter dash and the long jump as well as a three-time 100-meter dash state champion. She also set the Colorado state high school records in all three of those events. The mixed 4 × 400 metres relay event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 30 and 31 July 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. There were 16 competing relay teams, with each team having four members (two men and two women). It was the first mixed-gender relay in athletics held at the Olympic Games, as part of a larger focus on gender equality by the International Olympic Committee. The Georgia Bulldogs are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the University of Georgia. The Bulldogs compete in NCAA Division I and are members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The official mascot is an English Bulldog named Uga, (derived from an abbreviation of the ''University of Georgia''), while the costumed character version of Uga is Hairy Dawg. Reese Hoffa
Michael Reese Hoffa (born ''Maurice Antawn Chism''; October 8, 1977 in Evans, Georgia) is an American shot putter. Reese won the shot put in the 2006 World Indoor Track and Field Championships and in the 2007 World Outdoor Championships. He also won the bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. His personal bests stand at indoor and outdoor. In 2012, he threw over 21 meters in competition for the 100th time, putting him in rarefied air in the throwing community. Elija Godwin
Elija Godwin (born July 1, 1999) is an American athlete who specializes in the 400 meters. Career Early career Godwin is from Covington, Georgia and is a student at the University of Georgia. Initially, Godwin only ran on the track to condition himself for football. Then, once he began to train more seriously, he would run mostly 100 m and 200 m. This was until his coach, Kevin Barnes, looked at his split times and suggested he run an open 400 m race. Godwin ran 47.40 for the 400 m at his first race. Javelin injury On May 7, 2019, Godwin suffered a severe injury during a training session when he was impaled by a javelin while running backward sprints at Georgia track and field practice prior to the 2019 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Spec Towns Track
Spec Towns Track is the track and field facility and stadium for the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, Georgia. The track was originally built in 1964 and the stadium grandstand was added in 1987 to accommodate 1,000 spectators. In 2011, the Bulldogs hosted their first Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships since 1999 at the Spec Towns Track. Following the 2017 track season, the track was upgraded to a 400-meter, 8-lane Mondo Sportflex Super X720 surface (the same surface used at every Summer Olympics since 1992), replacing the old polyurethane track.
