George Smith (architect)
George Smith (28 September 1782 – 5 January 1869) was an English architect and surveyor of the early 19th century, with strong connections with central and south-east London. Life and work Smith was born on 28 September 1783 at Aldenham in Hertfordshire. He was articled to Robert Furze Brettingham, and later worked for James Wyatt, Daniel Asher Alexander, and then Charles Beazley, before eventually setting up his own practice in the City of London. He was appointed District Surveyor of the southern division of the City in 1810, and was elected Surveyor to the Mercers' Company in 1814, holding both appointments until his death. He also held the post of Surveyor to the Coopers' Company, and later served as their master. Smith's works included St Paul's School, then sited at the east end of St Paul's Churchyard (replacing a building demolished in 1824), and Gresham College in Basinghall Street (opened in 1843). George Smith (Scottish Artist)
George Smith RSA (2 February 1870 – 26 November 1934) was a Scottish artist specialising in landscapes and animals, with an emphasis on horses at work. Life He was born on 2 February 1870 in Mid Calder in West Lothian, just west of Edinburgh. He was educated at George Watsons College then studied art at the Board of Manufacturers in Edinburgh and then in Antwerp under Verlat. In the late 19th century he shared a studio with friend and fellow artist James Christie Prowett (1865–1946) at Beaton’s Mill in Bannockburn near Stirling. Prowett specialised in landscapes. Smith exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and Royal Scottish Academy. In later life he lived at 47 Lauder Road in the Grange area of Edinburgh. George Bundy Smith (April 7, 1937 – August 5, 2017) was a lawyer and judge in New York State. While he was a law student at Yale University, he participated in the Freedom Ride from Atlanta, Georgia, to Montgomery, Alabama. Early life Smith was born in New Orleans in 1937. He grew up in Washington, D.C., and attended Phillips Academy, where he was the only African-American in the Class of 1955. He received an A.B. degree from Yale University in 1959 and an LL.B. from Yale Law School in 1962. In addition, he earned his doctorate from NYU in Political Science. Early life and career George Hugh Smith was born in Philadelphia, the son of George Archibald Smith and Ophelia Ann Williams. His family moved back to Virginia when he was a child. George Smith (1805–1874), popularly known as Throttler Smith, was an English hangman from 1840 until 1872. He was born in Rowley Regis in the English West Midlands, where he performed the majority of his executions. Although from a good family he became involved with gangs and petty crime in his early life. He was himself arrested and was imprisoned in Stafford Gaol on several occasions for theft. Career as a hangman, 1840–1872 Smith learned his trade as an assistant to William Calcraft. His first engagement as Calcraft's assistant was the public execution of James Owen and George Thomas outside Stafford Gaol. Smith was a prisoner at Stafford at the time of Owen and Thomas' execution, and Calcraft appointed Smith for the task because his regular assistant had turned up drunk. Apart from his solo recordings, Smith is best known for his work backing both Muddy Waters and Big Mama Thornton.
