George Smith (footballer, Born 1936)
George Henry Smith (born 13 April 1936) is an English former professional football goalkeeper who made 435 appearances in the Football League. Smith was born in Nottingham, and began his career with local minor side Dale Rovers before attracting the attentions of Football League club Notts County. He signed for the club in July 1953 but did not make his debut until the 1955-56 season, although before long he established himself as number one, a position he held for over a decade. Hartlepool ( ) is a seaside and port town in County Durham, England. It is governed by a unitary authority borough named after the town. The borough is part of the devolved Tees Valley area with an estimated population of 92,600. The old town was founded in the 7th century, around the monastery of Hartlepool Abbey, on a headland. As the village grew into a town, in the Middle Ages, its harbour served as the County Palatine of Durham's official port. The new town of West Hartlepool was created, in 1835, after a new port was built and railway links from the South Durham coal fields (to the west) and from Stockton-on-Tees (to the south) were created.
