George Ramsay (footballer, Born 1855)
George Burrell Ramsay (4 March 1855 – 7 October 1935) was a Scottish footballer and manager. Ramsay was the secretary and manager of Aston Villa Football Club during the club's 'Golden Age'. As a player he was the first Aston Villa captain to lift a trophy, being instrumental in establishing the club as force in the game. A pioneer of the passing game, which he learned in his native Scotland, Aston Villa became renowned for their short, quick combination passing under his leadership. His trophy haul of six League Championships and six FA Cups established Aston Villa as the most successful club in England. He has been described as the world's first paid football manager. Billy Garraty
William Garraty (6 October 1878 – 6 May 1931) was a footballer in the early years of professional football in England, who played for Aston Villa from August 1897 to September 1908. Before playing for Villa he played for Aston Shakespeare. Garraty was capped once by England appearing in a game against Wales in 1903. Career Billy Garraty made his league debut for Aston Villa during the 1897–98 season but made just one other appearance that year and remained a bit part player as Aston Villa won the title the following year. Garraty became a first team regular in the 1899–1900 season as Aston Villa retained their title thanks to his league-leading 27 league goals – only Pongo Waring scored more in a single season. Charlie Athersmith
William Charles Athersmith Harper (10 May 1872 – 18 September 1910), known as Charlie Athersmith, was an English professional footballer who played as a winger. He played the majority of his club career at Aston Villa, making 307 appearances and scoring 85 goals, and also made 106 appearances for Small Heath. He was capped 12 times for England. Personal life Athersmith was born William Charles Athersmith Harper in Bloxwich, Staffordshire, to Isaac Harper and Mary Jane Wootton. Before becoming a professional footballer he was a clerk in Birmingham where he married Elizabeth Baggott in 1893. He is a first cousin of Rotherham United and Liverpool player Vic Wright. Black Country
The Black Country is an area of the West Midlands county, England covering most of the Metropolitan Boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association (The FA). Howard Spencer
Howard Spencer (23 August 1875 – 14 January 1940) was an English professional footballer. Often referred to as the "Prince of Fullbacks" due to his sportsmanship and ability, Spencer is considered one of the greatest Aston Villa captains of all time. John Devey
John Henry George Devey (26 December 1866 – 11 October 1940) was an English football player and a first-class cricketer. He is considered one of Aston Villa's greatest captains. Frederick Rinder
Frederick William Rinder (July 1858, Liverpool – 25 December 1938, Harborne, Birmingham) was a committee member and later influential chairman of Aston Villa F.C. during the club's 'Golden Age'. During Rinder's time as chairman, a period of 27 years, the Villa established themselves as the most successful football club in England winning no fewer than 6 League Championships and 5 FA Cups. Joe Grierson
Joseph Grierson (6 February 1855 – 1 April 1937) was an English football trainer during Aston Villa F.C.'s 'Golden Era'. Life Born in County Durham, Joe Grierson was a noted Middlesbrough athlete in his youth, winning the half mile handicap race three years in succession 1877, 1878 and 1879. He won the £25 prize in a 120-yard race in 1881. He became a trainer for the newly formed Middlesbrough Ironopolis F.C. in 1889. The club won three consecutive titles in the Northern League from 1890 to 1893. During the 1892–93 season, the team reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup before losing to Preston North End in a replay, after drawing the first game.
