George Percy, 9th Duke Of Northumberland
Henry George Alan Percy, 9th Duke of Northumberland (15 July 1912 – 21 May 1940) was the son of Alan Percy, 8th Duke of Northumberland and Lady Helen Gordon-Lennox. He was educated at Eton College. He served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Lord Privy Seal in 1935. During his lifetime, the 9th Duke was considered one of Britain's most eligible bachelors. He was killed at Pecq in Belgium, serving with the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards during the retreat to Dunkirk. His body is interred in the Esquelmes War Cemetery. He was succeeded as Duke of Northumberland by his brother Hugh Percy, 10th Duke of Northumberland. A posthumous portrait by Oswald Birley is now displayed at the family seat of Alnwick Castle. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is an intergovernmental organisation of six independent member states whose principal function is to mark, record and maintain the graves and places of commemoration of Commonwealth of Nations military service members who died in the two World Wars. The commission is also responsible for commemorating Commonwealth civilians who died as a result of enemy action during the Second World War. The commission was founded by Fabian Ware, Sir Fabian Ware and constituted through royal charter in 1917 as the Imperial War Graves Commission. The change to the present name took place in 1960. A grenadier ( , ; derived from the word ''grenade'') was historically an assault-specialist soldier who threw hand grenades in siege operation battles. The distinct combat function of the grenadier was established in the mid-17th century, when grenadiers were recruited from among the strongest and largest soldiers. Sir Oswald Hornby Joseph Birley (31 March 1880 – 6 May 1952) was an English portrait painter and royal portraitist in the early part of the 20th century. Early life and family Birley was born in New Zealand to Hugh Francis Birley (1855–1916) while his parents were on a world tour. He was born into an old Lancashire family. Upon returning to England, he was educated at Harrow School, London and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was the great-grandson of Hugh Hornby Birley (1778–1845), who led the troops at the Peterloo massacre. Hugh Algernon Percy, 10th Duke of Northumberland (6 April 1914 – 11 October 1988), styled Lord Hugh Percy between 1918 and 1940, was a British landowner, soldier and peer. He was the son of Alan Percy, 8th Duke of Northumberland, and Lady Helen Gordon-Lennox. He succeeded to the dukedom of Northumberland in 1940 when his brother, the 9th Duke, was killed in action in World War II. He served in the Northumberland Hussars and the Royal Regiment of Artillery during World War II, rising to the rank of captain. After the war, he served as a Conservative whip in the Churchill caretaker ministry.
