Bishop Francis Murphy (20 May 1795 – 26 April 1858) was an Irish-born Roman Catholic priest and first Catholic Bishop of Adelaide, South Australia. Early years Murphy was born at Navan, County Meath, Ireland, eldest son of Arthur Murphy, brewer and distiller, and his wife Bridget, ''née'' Flood.Osmund Thorpe,Murphy, Francis (1795 - 1858), '' Australian Dictionary of Biography'', Vol. 2, MUP, 1967, pp. 269-70; retrieved 27 October 2009. Francis Murphy (Australian Politician)
Sir Francis Murphy (1809 – 30 March 1891) was an Australian politician, first Speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Life Murphy was the son of Francis D. Murphy, who was for upwards of thirty years head of the South of Ireland Transport of Convicts Department. Francis was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1809, and after being educated in his native city, entered at Trinity College, Dublin, as a medical student, ultimately being admitted M.R.C.S. of London. In June 1836 Dr. Murphy emigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, and was immediately nominated by the Governor Sir Richard Bourke to a position on the staff of colonial surgeons. On appointment he proceeded to take charge of a portion of the southern district in the county of Argyle, but soon afterwards being led into agricultural pursuits, he resigned his official position, and finally discontinued practice as a medical man. Francis Murphy (24 April 1836 – 30 June 1907) was an American temperance evangelist. Biography Murphy was born in Tagoat, County Wexford, Ireland on 24 April 1836. He immigrated to the U.S. when he was 16 years old. He served in the Federal army during the Civil War. Beginning in 1870 at Portsmouth, N. H., he started temperance reform clubs throughout that state and was their first president. His headquarters were in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and after his first address there in 1876, 65,000 people signed the pledge he wrote: "With malice toward none, with charity for all, I hereby pledge my sacred honor that, God helping me, I will abstain from the use of all intoxicating liquors as a beverage, and that I will encourage others to abstain."''The New York Times'', July 1, 1907, page 7. Francis Dominick Murphy is an Irish judge and barrister who served as judge of the Irish High Court between 1982 and 1996 and was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ireland in 1996, serving until 2002. He was the chair of the group which produced the Ferns Report in 2005. Early life Murphy became a senior counsel in 1969. In addition to practice, he taught as a professor at the King's Inns. Francis Stack Murphy SL (1810? – 1860) was an Irish lawyer, scholar and Member of Parliament. Life Born in Cork, Murphy was the son of the merchant Jeremiah Murphy and the nephew of John Murphy, Bishop of Cork. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College and Trinity College, Dublin; he graduated B.A. in 1829 and M.A. in 1832. He was called to the bar on 25 January 1833 at Lincoln's Inn. In 1834, he became connected with ''Fraser's Magazine'' as an occasional contributor, assisting 'Father Prout' in his famous 'Reliques.' He was an excellent classical scholar, and was responsible for some of Mahony's Greek and Latin verses. Mahony introduces him in his 'Prout Papers' as 'Frank Cresswell of Furnival's Inn.' In 1841, he ran for election as a Member of Parliament for Cork City, which he won and took office on 5 July.
