Fort Edward is a town and the county seat of Washington County, New York, United States. The population was 10,205 at the 2011 census. Sir William Johnson
Sir William Johnson, 1st Baronet of New York ( – 11 July 1774), was a British Army officer and colonial administrator from Ireland. As a young man, Johnson moved to the Province of New York to manage an estate purchased by his uncle, Royal Navy officer Peter Warren, which was located in territory of the Mohawk, one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois League, or ''Haudenosaunee''. Johnson learned the Mohawk language and Iroquois customs, and was appointed the British agent to the Iroquois. Because of his success, he was appointed in 1756 as British Superintendent of Indian Affairs for all the northern colonies. Wing-Northup House, also known as the Washington County Historical Society Headquarters, is a historic home located at Fort Edward in Washington County, New York. It was built about 1815 by entrepreneur Daniel Wood Wing and is a two-story, five-bay, center entrance brick front building, with a two-story brick ell. Old Fort House is a historic house at 29 Lower Broadway in Fort Edward, Washington County, New York. The house is owned by the Fort Edward Historical Association and operated as a local history museum. ''See also:'' The Old Fort House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. History Revolutionary War The Old Fort House is a two-story, five bay, center hall frame building, with a shallow gambrel roof. It is one of the oldest wooden frame structures in Northern New York and was built in 1772 by Patrick Smyth from timbers salvaged from Fort Edward. Major General Philip Schuyler inspected the old fort during the Saratoga Campaign five years later, and determined that it was in no condition as a place to make a stand against General John Burgoyne, and consequently sought a location farther south. Fort Miller Reformed Church Complex is a historic church on Fort Miller Road, west of US 4 and south of Galusha Island and located at Fort Edward in Washington County, New York. History The church was built in 1816. It began as a two-story, clapboard-sided sanctuary with a four-story bell tower in the Federal style, attached to a carriage and horse shed dated to around 1818–22. A two-story rear wing was added in 1896. Fort Edward D&H Train Station
Fort Edward station (also known as the Fort Edward–Glens Falls) is an intercity train station in Fort Edward, New York. It was originally built as a Delaware and Hudson Railroad depot in 1900, as a replacement for two earlier stations. The first was built in 1840 but was later converted into a store in 1880, the same year it was replaced with a second depot on the existing site. The third and current station has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since December 13, 2000. The station serves both Fort Edward and nearby Glens Falls. It has one low-level side platform to the west of the single track of the Canadian Pacific Railway Canadian Subdivision.
