Footprints In The Desert
''Footprints in the Desert'' is the fifth studio album by Hugh Cornwell, released in April 2002 by Track Record. This album, Cornwell's second "lost album", compiles rare and unreleased tracks from the mid-1990s that were not part of a record deal. It was recorded in Bath with James Cadsky, who engineered the ''Wired'' album. The same year, Track Records also reissued Cornwell's 1999 album, ''Mayday'', on CD. In 2006, Cornwell told online music magazine ''Penny Black Music'' that the album "was a set of songs that I had recorded in the mid 90's which had never got released because I was out of a publishing deal and out of a record contract. On demand from the fan base we decided to put that out." Hugh Cornwell
Hugh Alan Cornwell (born 28 August 1949) is an English musician, singer-songwriter and writer, best known for being the lead vocalist and lead guitarist for the punk rock and new wave band the Stranglers from 1974 to 1990. Since leaving the Stranglers, Cornwell has gone on to record a further ten solo studio albums and continues to record and perform live. Early life and career Cornwell grew up in Tufnell Park and Kentish Town and attended William Ellis School in Highgate, where he played bass in a band with Richard Thompson, later a member of folk rock band Fairport Convention. In the late 1960s, after earning a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Bristol, he embarked on post-graduate research at Lund University in Sweden. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and DIY ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the production techniques of dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, cinema and literature. Track Records
Track Record (a.k.a. Track Records) was founded in 1966 in London by Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp, then managers of the rock group The Who. It was one of the first British-owned independent record labels in the United Kingdom. The most successful artists whose work appeared on the Track label were The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Thunderclap Newman and Golden Earring. The label ceased operations in 1978 but was revived in 1999. Background Track was originally intended to provide more creative freedom for the Who, but according to Stamp, at the end of 1966, he and Lambert were spurred to set up Track in order to get involved with new arrival from the United States, Jimi Hendrix. Hi Fi (album)
''Hi Fi'' is the fourth studio album by Hugh Cornwell, released on 2 October 2000 by Koch Entertainment. It is produced by Laurie Latham, who also worked on Cornwell's previous album ''Guilty'' (1997). All instrumentation is by Cornwell with appearances from Justin Chapman (drums), Michelle Marti (bass) and Mike Polson (guitar) from his touring band, a string quartet, and harmonica player John Dominic (ex-the Bo Street Runners, Deborah Bonham Band). In 2001, the album was released in the US ( Koch) and Europe (Edel) under the same title but with different artwork, an additional version of "Gingerbread Girl" and two live tracks. A remixed and remastered vinyl edition of ''Hi Fi'' was released by Cornwell's own HIS Records in 2021. Bath, Somerset
Bath () is a city in the Bath and North East Somerset unitary area in the county of Somerset, England, known for and named after its Roman-built baths. At the 2021 Census, the population was 101,557. Bath is in the valley of the River Avon, west of London and southeast of Bristol. Wired (Hugh Cornwell Album)
''Wired'' is the second solo studio album by Hugh Cornwell, released on 21 June 1993 on the Transmission label. It follows the collaboration album with Robert Williams, ''Nosferatu'' (1979), and first proper solo outing, ''Wolf'' (1988). ''Wired'' was produced by Gary Langan (Art of Noise), with the exception of "Ain't It Strange", which was produced by Cornwell. It was recorded in 1992 at Metropolis Studios in London and Soundlab Studios in Wiltshire. The album's progress was affected by contractual disputes. Cornwell was initially signed to Phoenix Records, but the label started to fall into difficulties and Cornwell cited them for breach of contract. A new deal was struck with NTV (Transmission) to finish the album. Phoenix then maintained that NTV had no right to release the album with arguments over the matter continuing until February 1994. ''Mayday'' is a live album by Hugh Cornwell. It was a live show recorded at Sankey's Soap in Manchester on 1 May 1998, hence the title. With Cornwell are Mike Polson (guitar and backing vocals), Michelle Marti (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Justin Chapman (drums). The set list consists entirely of Cornwell's solo work taken from his first two albums recorded after leaving The Stranglers, ''Wired'' and ''Guilty'', and from his 1979 collaboration with the Captain Beefheart drummer Robert Williams, ''Nosferatu''. "Venus in Furs" is a song by the Velvet Underground, written by Lou Reed and originally released on the 1967 album ''The Velvet Underground & Nico''. Inspired by the book of the same name by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, the song includes sexual themes of sadomasochism, bondage and submission. "Venus in Furs" was also released as a single on several occasions; in 1988 in the UK and as a live single in France and the UK, in 1993 and 1994 respectively. Lewis Allan Reed (March 2, 1942October 27, 2013) was an American musician, songwriter, and poet. He was the guitarist, singer, and principal songwriter for the rock band the Velvet Underground and had a solo career that spanned five decades.
