First Congregational Church Of Spokane
Westminster United Church of Christ, originally the First Congregational Church, is a historic church in the Cliff/Cannon neighborhood of Spokane, Washington. It is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. The current building was built in 1890 in a Richardsonian Romanesque style and enlarged in 1927 to include larger towers and a Sunday School. Soon afterwards, the congregation merged with Westminster Presbyterian Church. Richardsonian Romanesque is a style of Romanesque Revival architecture named after the American architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838–1886). The revival style incorporates 11th and 12th century southern French, Spanish, and Italian Romanesque characteristics. Richardson first used elements of the style in his Richardson Olmsted Complex in Buffalo, New York, designed in 1870. Multiple architects followed in this style in the late 19th century; Richardsonian Romanesque later influenced modern styles of architecture as well. Cliff/Cannon is a neighborhood in Spokane, Washington. It is located immediately south of Downtown, Spokane, and on the lower reaches of the broader South Hill. The neighborhood is home to a medical district with Sacred Heart and Deaconess both having their main hospital campuses along Cliff/Cannon's denser northern edge. To the south the neighborhood becomes more residential. City parks break up the residential zoning of the southern half of Cliff/Cannon.
