Field Hockey At The 1972 Summer Olympics
The field hockey tournament at the 1972 Summer Olympics was the 12th edition of the field hockey event at the Summer Olympics. The West German victory was the first title by a European nation since 1920, but this was marred by the behavior of Pakistani players, fans, and officials: during the last ten minutes of the gold medal match, the umpires had to stop play twice so that Pakistani fans who had invaded the pitch could be removed, while Pakistani players and officials repeatedly remonstrated with the umpires throughout that time. At the final whistle, Pakistani fans and officials invaded the pitch and assaulted West German police and stadium security before storming the tournament officials' table and pouring a bucket of water over International Hockey Federation president Rene Frank, while the players stormed their locker room before proceeding to destroy it. Islahuddin Siddique
Islahuddin Siddique (born 10 January 1948), also spelled Islah-ud-Din Siddiqui, is a field hockey player from Pakistan. He was born in Meerut, India. A right winger from Pakistan, he led Pakistan to Hockey World Cup glory in 1978. Not only did Pakistan win the World Cup under his captaincy but it completed a grand slam by winning the Champions Trophy and an Asian Games Gold medal as well in 1978. Islahuddin Siddiqui played between 1967 and 1978, he was capped 130 times and scored 137 goals. He won the Silver medal in the 1972 Summer Olympics at Munich, W. Germany and a Bronze medal in the 1976 Summer Olympics at Montreal. Islahuddin was member of team that won 1971 World Cup under Captaincy of Khalid Mehmood in Barcelona. Jahangir Butt
Jahangir Butt (17 April 1943 – 7 September 2021) was a Pakistani field hockey player. He was born in Gujranwala, Punjab, British Raj. He won a gold medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, and a silver medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Career Butt succeeded former Pakistani veteran field hockey player Motiullah as the left winger in the Pakistani side. He was part of the Pakistani side which clinched silver in the men’s field hockey tournament at the 1966 Asian Games and won gold with the national side in the men’s tournament at the 1970 Asian Games. He represented Pakistan at the Olympics on two occasions in 1968 and 1972 where Pakistan clinched gold and silver respectively in the men's field hockey tournaments. Akhtar Rasool (born 13 January 1954) ( ur, اختر رسول) is a field hockey player, captain and olympian from Pakistan who won the gold medal with the Men's National Hockey Team at the Hockey World Cup 1978, and again in 1982. He played as Center Half for the Pakistan hockey team. Akhtar is considered one of the creative geniuses in centre-half recovery and ball distribution.
