The Fuerza Especial Conjunta (''Joint Special Operations Command'') or FEC, previously known as Fuerza Especial de Reaccion (FER) or Fuerza Especial del Alto Mando (FEAM) (''High Command Special Force'') is a special unit of SEDENA, under operational control of the Joint National Defense Staff (''Estado Mayor Conjunto de la Defensa Naciona''l). The unit's missions primarily involve counterterrorism, hostage rescue, direct action, and special reconnaissance against high-value targets. FEC, and its Navy counterpart, FES are the Mexican military's special units tasked with performing the most complex, covert, and dangerous missions directed by the President of Mexico. Most FEC assaulters are selected from the Mexican Army elite Parachute Brigade and Special Forces Command, though selection is open to other conventional forces across the Army and also other branches such the Air Force and National Guard. The Mexican Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA; ) is the government department responsible for managing Mexico's Army and Air Forces. Its head is the Secretary of National Defense who, like the co-equal Secretary of the Navy, is directly answerable to the President. The National Guard () is the national gendarmerie of Mexico, created in 2019 by absorbing units and officers from the Federal Police (Mexico), Federal Police, Mexican Army, Military Police, and Mexican Navy, Naval Police. In 2022, a reform package approved in the Mexican Congress transferred command of the National Guard to the Secretariat of National Defense. History The National Guard was launched by President of Mexico, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2019. It has since played a major part in intensifying the enforcement of immigration policy. Los Zetas
Los Zetas (, Spanish for "The Zs") is a Mexican criminal syndicate and designated terrorist organization, known as one of the most dangerous of Mexico's drug cartels. They are known for engaging in brutally violent " shock and awe" tactics such as beheadings, torture, and indiscriminate murder. While primarily concerned with drug trafficking, the organization also ran profitable sex and gun rackets. Los Zetas also operated through protection rackets, assassinations, extortion, kidnappings and other illegal activities.
