Frank O'Connor
Frank O'Connor (born Michael Francis O'Donovan; 17 September 1903 – 10 March 1966) was an Irish author and translator. He wrote poetry (original and translations from Irish), dramatic works, memoirs, journalistic columns and features on aspects of Irish culture and history, criticism, long and short fiction (novels and short stories), biography, and travel books. He is most widely known for his more than 150 short stories and for his memoirs. The Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award was named in his honour, as is the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Fellowship. Early life Raised in Cork, he was the only child of Minnie (née O'Connor) and Michael O'Donovan. He attended Saint Patrick's School on Gardiner's Hill. Frank O'Connor (died November 22, 1959) was an American character actor and director involved in approximately 300 productions. He was a director of several films; he also penned multiple screenplays. Career In 1920, Frank O'Connor arrived in Hollywood, where he joined the Lasky Players. Henry Miller mentored him. Later, O'Connor was a freelance writer and character actor. After a career as a film director, he attempted to produce his own and, in the words of the ''San Francisco Examiner'', "went broke"; he subsequently worked as an extra. Personal life O'Connor was married to a woman named Susan, and they had three children; he died in Los Angeles, California on November 22, 1959, at 78 years old. Charles Francis "Frank" O'Connor (September 22, 1897 – November 7, 1979) was an American actor, painter, and rancher and the husband of novelist Ayn Rand. Frank O'Connor performed in several films, typically as an extra, during the silent and early sound eras. While working on the set of the 1927 film ''The King of Kings (1927 film), The King of Kings'', O'Connor met Rand, and they eventually dated each other steadily. They married in 1929. When O'Connor and Rand moved to California so Rand could work on the The Fountainhead (film), movie adaptation of her novel ''The Fountainhead'', O'Connor purchased and managed a ranch in the San Fernando Valley for several years. Frank Henry O'Connor (September 15, 1868 – December 26, 1913) was an American physician and professional baseball player who played for the 1893 Philadelphia Phillies. Biography O'Connor was born in 1868 in Keeseville, New York. He attended and played baseball for three different colleges—St. Joseph College in Burlington, Vermont; the University of Vermont (UVM), also in Burlington; and Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He also studied in the medical schools at UVM and Dartmouth. O'Connor was 24 years old when he broke into the major leagues on August 3, 1893, with the Philadelphia Phillies as a left-handed pitcher. He played in only three games, with a win–loss record of 0–0 and an earned run average (ERA) of 11.25. He had two hits in two at bats, including a home run, for a rare 1.000 batting average. Frank Patrick O'Connor (April 9, 1885 – August 21, 1939) was a Canadian politician, businessman and philanthropist. He was the founder of Laura Secord Chocolates in Canada and Fanny Farmer in the United States. He is the namesake behind O'Connor Drive in Toronto. Early years O'Connor was born in Deseronto, Ontario, the son of Mary Eleanor McKeown and Patrick O'Connor. He quit school at the age of 14 and started working at Canadian General Electric in Peterborough. Around 1910 he opened The Canadian Chicle Co. at 283 George Street (North) in downtown Peterborough, which sold candy and a form of Chiclets under the product name "Elizabeth's Best". Francis Arthur O'Connor (1906-1964) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s and represented his state and country. He was a triple premiership winner with South Sydney. Playing career South Sydney O'Connor was a champion forward who played for South Sydney for ten seasons between 1927 and 1937. O'Connor was a member of the champion Souths teams of the late 1920s and 1930s. SS ''Frank O'Connor'' was a bulk carrier ship that sank in Lake Michigan off the coast of North Bay, Door County, Wisconsin, United States in 1919. In 1994 the shipwreck site was added to the National Register of Historic Places. History Originally called the ''City of Naples'', the ''Frank O'Connor'' was built in West Bay City, Michigan in 1892. The vessel was renamed in 1916. Francis Raymond O'Connor (28 January 1913 – q4 1980), generally known as Raymond O'Connor but also as Frank O'Connor, was an English footballer who played as a right half in the Football League for Mansfield Town and Darlington.
