Frank (Squeeze Album)
''Frank'' is a studio album by new wave group Squeeze, released in 1989. The album sold poorly, and Squeeze was dropped by A&M Records while on tour. Forced to take offers from different major labels for the first time in their career, the band soon signed with Reprise Records and began working on their next studio album, '' Play''. ''Frank'' peaked at number 58 in the UK Albums Chart. It peaked at No. 113 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Style Susan Whitall of ''The Honolulu Advertiser'' described ''Frank'' as having a "typically Squeezian diversity of songs". The album was described as post-punk. Squeeze are an English Rock music, rock band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the New wave music, new wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording in the 1980s, 1990s and 2010s. In the UK, their singles "Cool for Cats (song), Cool for Cats", "Up the Junction (song), Up the Junction", and "Labelled with Love" were top-ten chart hits. Though not as commercially successful in the United States, Squeeze had American hits with "Tempted (Squeeze song), Tempted", "Black Coffee in Bed", and "Hourglass (Squeeze song), Hourglass", and were considered a part of the Second British Invasion. In the vast majority of their material, lyrics are written by Chris Difford and music by Glenn Tilbrook, who are guitarists and vocalists in the band. The duo were hailed as "the heirs to Lennon–McCartney, Lennon and McCartney's throne" during the band's initial popularity in the late 1970s. ''British Hit Singles & Albums'' (originally known as ''The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles'' and ''The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums'') was a music reference work, reference book originally published in the United Kingdom by the publishing arm of the Guinness breweries, Guinness Superlatives. Later editions were published by HIT Entertainment (who had bought the Guinness World Records brand). It listed all the singles and albums featured in the Top 75 pop charts in the United Kingdom, UK. Matt Irving
Matt Irving (born Glasgow, Scotland; 16 March 1950 – 3 April 2015) was a Scottish singer and musician who played keyboards, accordion, and bass guitar. Irving was the bass guitar player for Manfred Mann's Earth Band between 1981 and 1986. He featured on the albums '' Somewhere in Afrika'' and ''Budapest Live''. Since leaving the band he has guested (on keyboards) with the Lords of the New Church, Squeeze, Chris Rea, Paul Young, and former Pink Floyd musician Roger Waters. Gilson Lavis
David Leslie Gilson Lavis ( , born 27 June 1951) is an English drummer and portrait artist. He gained fame as the drummer with band Squeeze in the 1970s and 1980s. Lavis was later the drummer for Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, with former Squeeze bandmate Jools Holland, before retiring from drumming towards the end of 2024. Before joining Squeeze, he had already built up a substantial amount of experience, having toured with Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Dolly Parton. He was working in a brickyard when he noticed the advertisement in ''Melody Maker'' for Squeeze. Lavis and Holland both appeared (albeit uncredited) as members of "The Nice Twelve" in the 1994 partially-improvised comedy film '' There's No Business...'', starring Raw Sex (Simon Brint and Rowland Rivron) and The Oblivion Boys. Julian Miles Holland (born 24 January 1958) is an English pianist, bandleader, singer, composer and television presenter. Chris Difford
Christopher Henry Difford (born 4 November 1954) is an English musician. He is a founding member and songwriter of the rock group Squeeze. Early life Difford was born in Greenwich, London, on 4 November 1954, the youngest of three sons. His mother, Isabel (née Hamilton) was from Northern Ireland and met Difford's father Sidney Lewis Difford (1919–2001) while he was stationed in Belfast during World War II. Music career Difford has written lyrics for over 50 years, most notably in partnership with Glenn Tilbrook. The two were primary members in Squeeze and Difford & Tilbrook. According to Difford, he stole 50p from his mother's purse to put a card in a local sweetshop window advertising for a guitarist to join his band, although he did not have one at the time. Tilbrook was the only person who responded to the advert and they met for the first time shortly afterwards. ''Argybargy'' is the third studio album by the English new wave band Squeeze. Written and recorded after the band's successful sophomore release, '' Cool for Cats'', the album's lyrics were written by Chris Difford while living with his wife in New York City. The band reunited with ''Cool for Cats'' producer John Wood and, after Glenn Tilbrook composed music for Difford's new lyrics, recorded the album in late 1979. ''Argybargy'' was a commercial and critical success, reaching number 32 in the UK and becoming the first Squeeze album to chart in the US. The album has since been recognized as a classic of new wave and features multiple of the band's most famous songs, including "Another Nail in My Heart," " Pulling Mussels (from the Shell)," and " If I Didn't Love You." ''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who, Dave Schulps, and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''.
