Forest (bicycle-sharing System)
Forest (formerly HumanForest) is a dockless bicycle hire service in London in the United Kingdom. The service charges riders £1 to unlock their ride, and rewards them with 1 minute for parking in borough designated parking areas. As of September 2021, Forest has over 800 bicycles on city streets, making it one of the four main e-bike operators in London, competing with Santander Cycles (docked) and Lime, these services replacing Chinese companies Mobike and Ofo after their insolvencies and removal. Forest launched in 2020, but was shut down within months after someone was injured due to a faulty e-bike. The company recalled all of the bikes and replaced them, restarting service in 2021. In August 2023, the service was renamed to Forest. The service aims to be different to its competition by promoting green ideals and providing users with 10 minutes of free service per day (users still need to pay an "unlock fee" for every ride, which is currently £1). A bicycle-sharing system, bike share program, public bicycle scheme, or public bike share (PBS) scheme, is a shared transport service where bicycles are available for shared use by individuals at low cost. The programmes themselves include both docking and dockless systems, where docking systems allow users to rent a bike from a dock, i.e., a technology-enabled bicycle rack and return at another node or dock within the system – and dockless systems, which offer a node-free system relying on smart technology. Santander Cycles
Santander Cycles (formerly Barclays Cycle Hire) is a public bicycle hire scheme in London in the United Kingdom. The scheme's bicycles have been popularly known as Boris Bikes, after Boris Johnson who was Mayor of London when the scheme began operating. The operation of the scheme was initially contracted by Transport for London (TfL) to Serco. Bikes and docking stations are provided by 8D Technologies. The scheme is sponsored, with Santander UK being the main sponsor from April 2015. Barclays was the first sponsor, from 2010 to March 2015. Credit for developing and enacting the scheme has been a source of debate.
