For Pete's Sake!
''For Pete's Sake!'' is a 1934 ''Our Gang'' short comedy film directed by Gus Meins. It was the 127th ''Our Gang'' short to be released. Plot After Wally fills little Marianne's favorite doll with sawdust and gives it to her, neighborhood bully Leonard lassos it with a rope and swings it out in the street, where a passing truck crushes it. The gang then promises to purchase a new doll for the brokenhearted girl, as her big sister Jane comforts her. Unfortunately, the kids have no money; but it doesn't dampen their spirits. They window shop for a doll at the local toy store, where Leonard's equally obnoxious father, who coincidentally owns the store, agrees to give the kids a doll if they will trade their beloved Pete the Pup for it. Balking at this proposition, the kids concoct a variety of moneymaking schemes, all of them doomed to failure. Tearfully, the gang surrenders and trades Pete for the doll. Gus Meins
Gus Meins (March 6, 1893 – August 1, 1940), born Gustave Peter Ludwig Luley, was an American film director. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany. Career Meins started out in the ‘teens as a cartoonist for the ''Los Angeles Evening Herald'' before becoming a comedy writer for Fox Film in 1919. In the 1920s, Meins directed a number of silent film, silent short subjects film series for Universal Pictures, including the ''Buster Brown'' comedies. He is best known as senior director of Hal Roach's ''Our Gang'' comedies from 1934 to 1936, and also as director of Laurel and Hardy's ''Babes in Toyland (1934 film), Babes in Toyland'' (1934). His assistant director was a young Gordon Douglas (director), Gordon Douglas, who became senior director in 1936 when Meins left ''Our Gang'' for other directing jobs at Roach. Marianne Edwards
Marianne Edwards (December 9, 1930 – November 8, 2013) was an American child actress who appeared in the ''Our Gang'' film series from 1934 to 1936. She also appeared in several feature films in the 1930s, including ''Gold Diggers Of 1933'', '' Babes In Toyland'', and ''Stand Up and Cheer!''. Edwards' most memorable ''Our Gang'' appearance was as the five-year-old Amateur Night contestant "Daisy Dimple, Dancer Par Excellence" suddenly stricken with stage fright in '' Beginner's Luck''. In the film George "Spanky" McFarland wins the prize money for her so she can buy her dancing costume ("Girlie, the dress is in the bag!"). Lyle Tayo (born Lyle Minnie Shipman; January 19, 1889 – May 2, 1971), aka Lyle Barton, was an American film actress who appeared in more than 50 films between 1921 and 1948, appearing in many short comedies at the Hal Roach Studios, several in support of Laurel and Hardy.
