Fencing At The 2024 Summer Olympics – Men's Sabre
The men's sabre event at the 2024 Summer Olympics took place on 27 July 2024 at the Grand Palais strip. Background This was the 30th appearance of the event, which was the only fencing event to have been held at every Summer Olympics. The three-time defending champion Áron Szilágyi lost in the round of 32, making his first loss since 2008. Qualification Competition format The 1996 tournament had vastly simplified the competition format into a single-elimination bracket, with a bronze medal match. Fencing was done to 15 touches. Standard sabre rules regarding target area, striking, and priority were used. Schedule The competition was held over a single day, Saturday, 27 July. Mitchell Saron (December 6, 2000) is an American right-handed sabre fencer. He represented the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, in the Men's sabre and Men's team sabre in July 2024. Early life Saron was born on December 6, 2000, and is Filipino American and Jewish. His hometown is Ridgewood, New Jersey. Education Saron attended Ridgewood High School. He studied economics at Harvard University and graduated in 2023. Fencing In 2019, Saron won a gold medal in the team portion of the National Champion for the U.S. National Championships. In 2023, he was 14th at the Madrid Men's Sabre World Cup. In 2024, Saron won a gold medal for the Men's Saber World Cup in the team's portion while he was representing Team USA. Saron represented the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, in the Men's sabre and Men's team sabre on July 27 and 31, 2024. Evann Jean Abba Girault (born 25 August 2004) is a French-Nigerien sabre fencer. He qualified to represent Niger at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Biography Girault was born on 25 August 2004 in Orléans, France, to a French father and Nigerien mother. He holds dual citizenship. He grew up in Orléans and competed in gymnastics as a youth for seven or eight years. His brother was a fencer, and after watching him participate at various events, he decided to try out the sport himself. He joined the fencing club in 2015. Girault competes in sabre fencing events and is right-handed. In addition to competing at tournaments in France, he started competing internationally in 2021, choosing to represent Niger. He was ranked 119th globally in the junior rankings for the 2021–22 season and competed at several events with his brother. Eli Dershwitz
Eli Dershwitz ( ; born September 23, 1995) is an American left-handed saber fencer, five-time individual Pan American champion, three-time Olympian, and the 2023 saber World Champion. In 2014, Dershwitz won the US Men's Saber National Championship, becoming the youngest US senior men's saber championship holder. Dershwitz then won the 2015 Junior World Fencing Championships in saber, becoming the inaugural U.S. men's saber fencer to win a world title. He is a five-time Pan-American Championship title holder, and the 2015 Pan American Games champion in saber. Dershwitz competed in fencing at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He returned to Harvard University as a sophomore, winning individual saber in the 2017 NCAA Fencing Championship and as a junior in the 2018 NCAA Fencing Championship. He was ranked #1 in the United States as of February 2018, and was ranked #1 in the world as of July 2018.

Csanád Gémesi (born 13 November 1986) is a Hungarian right-handed sabre fencer, 2018 team European champion, and 2021 team Olympic bronze medalist. Career Gémesi won a bronze medal in the 2003 Cadet World Championships in Trapani. In 2013, he took part in his first World Championships, which were held that year in Hungary. He reached the quarter-finals, where he was defeated by team-mate and reigning Olympic champion Áron Szilágyi. The next season, he climbed his first World Cup podium with a silver medal in Madrid. Colin Yang Siqi Heathcock (December 20, 2005) is an American right-handed sabre fencer. He represented the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Early life and education Heathcock was born to Virgil Heathcock and Julie Yang in Beijing, China and raised in Palo Alto, California. He has an older brother, Antonio, who is also a fencer. By 13 years old, Heathcock was competing internationally representing Germany, where his father has dual citizenship.
